PLANNING OF DOUBLING OF BROAD GAUGE RAILWAY LINE AT

Doubling of railway line means construction of an additional line. It is
normally done when single line is not in a position to carry the number of
trains required to pass on the section.
The doubling of Utraitia - Sultanpur-Zafrabad project is for diverting
freight traffic from Mughalsarai - Allahabad - New Delhi route so as to
provide room for additional coaching traffic to be introduced in near
future .
The patch doubling from Zafrabad to Shri Krishna Nagar (34 kms),
Sultanpur to Bandhuakalan (09 kms) & Utraitia to Chandraulli (37
kms) has been completed. The balance 148 km stretch is with single
railway track that need to be double.
Specific section of 10 kms length between Shivnagar and Bandhuakalan has
been selected for the project.
OBJECTIVE
To eradicate
mounting pressure
of rail traffic.
To get the
optimum benefit
from the modern
maintenance
machines.
To cope up with
the additional
requirement to
traffic. The need to divert
rail traffic from
one route to
another due to
accident /mishap,
or any other
unforeseen reason.
To reduce initial
costs of a line that
is certain to see
heavy traffic in the
future, a line may
be built as single-
track .

SPECIFICATION OF WORK
Rail and fastenings
The permanent way consists of 60 kg (UIC), 90 UTS rails welded into LWR (By
FB(Flush butt welding)/AT(Alumino-Thermit welding) welding with SKV
process) over main line. Loop lines, consist 60 Kg 90 UTS SH rails welded into
LWR (By AT welding with SKV process).
Fish Plates
1 M Long new fish plates with six holes of standard type to suit 60
kg rails have been used.
Sleepers and fastenings
MAIN LINE: PRC sleepers complete with elastic fastenings to M+ 8 (1660 no.
per Km) densities have been used.
LOOP LINE: PRC sleepers complete with elastic fastenings to M+ 7 (1540 no.
per Km) densities have been used.
Guard Rails
Guard rails of 52 Kg rails resting on PSC sleepers have been provided on all major
bridges.
Points and Crossings
All turn out to be negotiated by passenger trains are of 1 in 12 with curved
switches except turn outs laid for sand humps which are of 1 in 8-1/2 laid on
symmetrical split.
60 kg trap points on PSC sleepers have been provided wherever required for the
purpose of isolation in new line.
Ballast
65mm gauge hard stone Machine Crushed ballast with cushion of 350mm on main
line and 250 mm on loop line below the sleeper has been provided under the track
and turn outs with boxing. The newly laid track and turn outs have been thoroughly
packed manually and machine packing will be done before commissioning

It can
manage a

the capacity

Faster trains
can overtake
slower ones,
and doubling
can
contribute to
faster

trains.
It is easy to

Provision of
alternate

Doubling would

We must restore the strength of
