Down Syndrome is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21. It is characterized by physical traits like a broad short skull and mental retardation. People with Down Syndrome can have mild, moderate, or severe mental retardation, but with education and training they can still lead independent lives despite their individual strengths and weaknesses. Having severe mental retardation does not mean a person cannot think or feel.
