Teaching Philosophy Statement
Hossein Nezakati
March 2016
Teaching Paradigm
Einstein said that ¡°learning = changing behaviour¡±. My teaching philosophy based on that.
If Theoretical subjects could not play roles in daily life, they will bury between papers in
library shelves. Anything is taught in class should be implemented in real life. I named it:
¡°Management in Action, Marketing in Action¡¡±
I have created a paradigm for myself:¡± Golden Triangles¡±. Triangle is the first stable figure
in nature and circles as the most stable form are array of infinite triangles around a mutual
centre. As we see in normal life, 3 abbreviations are easier to memorize and more common
such as IBM, SME, GPS, WTO ¡ and also this criteria is not bounded in only one or two
sciences. It¡¯s a worldwide notion. My Academic Golden Triangle follows this Paradigm:
Advice, Research and Teaching (ART)
Methodology
I believe that students should trust on me and after that they could accept new things and
more easy to learn. For reaching to this goal based on Student Centred Learning (SCL)
approach and following AACSB procedures, psychological barriers of students should be
broken. I try to reduce stress on them and create a friendly atmosphere in class. It makes no
difference for me if I have face to face classes or virtual classes. For sure Actual classes
with gesture and eye contact are easier rather than virtual classes. On the other hand virtual
classes have the advantage of more relaxation and informal positions.
I try to ignite Core Competencies of each student by Active Learning. In most of my
classes, when I want each student to write own core competencies, they write almost 8-10
competencies. But after I clear out and review their Capabilities (Abilities, Capacities and
Ambitious), they reach very nearly to 28-30. Each student as a unique human being can
develop the world of him/herself and consequently the entire world.
By applying Experiential Learning and hands-on Work, I try to convey this meaning to my
students: ¡°We start a journey together and in each step of this journey we learn a lot. At the
end of the runway, when we look at the back we will find out there is ¡°Perfection¡±, before
and after of this semester is not the same. We learn together.¡±
I put much more emphasis on Team building activities rather than individual tasks by
Cooperative Learning. They learn during one semester how to meet the Objectives, Duties,
Sharing Information and finally Time Management. They will understand that all team
members are living in same boat and all or none of them will conquer.
Case-based Teaching and Problem-based Learning are the other methods which are used
in my classes. Due to my management experience as General Manager and participating in
Case Writers¡¯ Association of Malaysia (CWAM) as Executive member, CASE Writing, Mind
Mapping and COLOUR TECHNOLOGY are prominence techniques in my classes.
Evaluation
Creativity is the most important parameter for me to evaluate students. How they can built a
way when there is no way. Even for their final presentation, creating the new ways and
breaking the rigid, repeated forms play very authentic role.
I clarify for students anything will have its own consequences and good thing will have its
own reward. May be my own Reward System is simple, as I give STAR for each individual
response to my question and or any other class activities, but it shows very impressive and
encourage students to get as much as STARS to support them for high final class marking. I
do not use any punishment but on the other hand they learn if they do not gain any reward
they will be out of track.
In each class all the students select teammate and create unique team name and their own
Logo. They should build a stand for their logo and bring it each session. They are
recognized by their team name and every class activities by that team will bring marks for
them. At the final week each team should present final presentation with demonstrating
creative ways, other students engagement, Video clips followed by Q&A section.
Teaching Assessment
I do trust on my students and their thoughtful kind understanding. May be during the
semester they have to do a lot of class activities but at the same time they learn by
themselves. I keen for their feedbacks. The entire official and informal records shows
obviously I choose a correct way and each semester I improve myself due to their precious
teaching assessments.
I read all of them but I cannot forget one of those feedbacks:
¡°We get many things from our beloved lecturer ¡°Dr. Hossein¡±, and his method is
totally different. But unforgettable authentic point is:
Learning with Enjoyment!
