Depleted uranium (DU) weapons were used for the first time during the Gulf War in 1991, with 500-800 tons dropped in Iraq, especially near Basrah. This exposed around 45% of the local population to DU. In the years following, cancer rates in Basrah dramatically increased. Other health issues like birth defects and unknown kidney and neurological problems also emerged. Younger people developed cancers usually seen in older patients. Cancer clusters among families also appeared, and cases were uniformly spread throughout Basrah. The cancer incidence rate in Basrah rose from 11 per 100,000 people in 1988 to 75 per 100,000 in 1998 and 116 per 100,000 in 2001.
