Dr Luqman Zakariyah holds a L.L.B degree in Shar朝ah (Islamic Law) from Islamic
University Medina, Saudi Arabia; a Masters in Islamic Studies from Lagos State
University, Nigeria and a PhD in Islamic Legal Studies from the University of Wales,
Lampeter. UK. Dr Zakariyah has worked and researched in various academic institutions.
He was a Teaching Fellow and lecturer of the Study of Islamic and Muslims, University
of Aberdeen and Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education Dundee UK respectively
between 2009-2013. He was also ILSP Fellow of Harvard Law, USA between 2012-
2013, a Visiting Scholar of Ripon College, Cuddesdon, (Oxford Hilary Term 2012) and
an Honorary Visiting Lecturer, Department of Shar朝ah and Economics, Academy of
Islamic Studies University of Malay between June-July 2010. He is currently Assistant
Professor at the department of Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh, KIRKHS, International Islamic
University Malaysia.
In addition to his wide ranges of experiences in different higher education institutions, he
has taught many different courses related to Islamic law in particular and to Islam and
Muslims in general. Among those course are: Core Sources and Approaches in the Study
of Islam and Muslims; Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence (Usul al-Fiqh), Islamic
Jurisprudence (al-Fiqh), Islamic Criminal Law (fiqh al-jinyt), Underlying Principles of
Islamic Banking and Finance, Islam and the West, Multiculturalism in Theory and
Practice Globalisation and Political Islam; Islam, Muslims and International Relations;
Multiculturalism in Theory and Practice; Women in Islam; Human Rights (Islam and
Human Rights); Islam and Muslim in History and Society (Umayyad and Abbasid
Dynasties). At his present academic job, he teaches Islamic criminal law (fiqh al-jinyt);
Legal maxims of Islamic law (qawid fiqhiyyah); Introduction to the principles of
Islamic jurisprudence (u 笛l al-fiqh畊 ) in both Arabic and English languages and Research
Methodology.
Dr Zakariayh has published book and articles in reputable academic publishing company

His research focuses generally on exploring how Islamic law can engage in modern
debate on various issues; Islamic banking and finance both products and models, socio-
political and economic challenges, family structure in Islam and the challenge of
reformation. He also has an interest in how the overall objectives of Islam (Maq id al-畊
Shar朝ah) can mitigate the tension between Islamic traditionalists and modernists.

technology in Islamic criminal procedure where lines are drawn between rights of
Allah and rights of human beings involved in criminal activities. I engage the

five Islamic legal values how they can be extrapolated from the texts (Quran and
Sunnah). I engage students on the application of the sources examining the
hierarchical orders of the sources and the issue of decisiveness (qa iyyah畊 ) and
speculativeness ( aniyyah畉 ) of these sources in both transmission (thub笛t) and
meaning (dillah). I examine students through application of the sources to

Administrative Duties:
 I coordinated Extended Induction for Postgraduate Masters Students in 2011
and 2012. My duties were to draft programs for the workshop, invite
lecturers/speakers at the inductions and to lead students to University of
Aberdeen. I also introduced evaluation of the Induction this year from which
some areas were identified for development. The feedback has been submitted to
the Student administrator for further action.
 I coordinated course AM5002 Core Sources and Approaches in the Study of Islam
and Muslims in 2011 and 2012. My responsibility was to invite lecturers to
participate in the course and to submit evaluation feedback of the students to
Director of Graduate School.
 I coordinated Postgraduate Research Method AM5509 in spring 2011. My duties
were to draft course workshops, invite lecturers/speakers to participate in the
course and to oversee the smoothness of the class.
 I organised a workshop on Islamic Finance 2011. My duties were to invite
speaker and participants from outside. I also run the administrative side of the
programme in conjunction with my academic and admin staff of Al-Maktoum.
 I coordinated winter postgraduate research training workshop 2012 in which I
invited some guest speakers to the workshop before I handed it to my colleague
due to my secondment to Ripon College
 I coordinated and organised summer postgraduate research training workshop
2012. I was responsible for the smoothness of the two days programme. I also
responsible for writing report on the workshop which has been submitted to the
Acting Director of the Graduate School.
 I served as secretary of Student Affairs Committee 2010-2011. During the period,
I was responsible for taking the minutes and organising the meeting with direction
from the Director of the Graduate School.
