The Impact of Vocational and Technical Education and Training on Osun
Communities.
Background History of the State of Osun
 Osun State was carved out of the old Oyo State on August 27,
1991 thus becoming an independent state on its own.
 The state's name is derived from River Osun, the venerated
natural spring considered as the manifestation of the Yoruba
goddess of procreation, Osun
 The capital city is Osogbo
 It has 30 Local Governments and 1 Area Office - making31
 It is a Yoruba-speaking state, and its major sub-ethnic groups are
Ife, Ijesha, Oyo, Ibolo and Igbomina
 The state's current governor is Adegboyega Oyetola
Current Situation of the Technical Colleges in the State of Osun
 5 Billion Naira has been invested in Revamping Technical and
Vocational Education in the State in the last 5 years
 A total of 34 workshops in the 9 Colleges are currently being
upgraded.
 The funds was expended on purchasing and delivery of ICT and
Technical Equipment for the nine technical colleges.
 A total of 124 specialist teachers have been trained for the schools,
 Text materials for all the courses have been developed by various
experts, and are awaiting moderation and editorial work.
 Four Technical Colleges are fully upgraded and ready for take off
 Life Academy concept is incorporated in the newly upgraded
Colleges,

Impact of TVET on Osun Communities
 Empowerment of hitherto unemployed and unemployable youths by
offering short term skill acquisition programme in leather works, catering
and hotel management, metal fabrication, plumbing, welding, etc and
ensuring micro-credit opportunity for the participants in the Training
programme
 Official arrangements to attach trainees to relevant industries and follow-up
efforts on the possibilities for employment opportunity
 Mandating all Government Agencies to patronize products of the Technical
Colleges and for service deliveries in areas like Auto mechanics, Plumbing,
Electrical installation, Welding and metal fabrication, Furniture making and
Leather work
 Mandating all MDAs to only engage artisans or employ only those with the
Osun State Technical College Certificates
 Encouragement of Osun State micro credit scheme to give priority to
graduates of the Technical Colleges when it comes to granting loans for
small scale businesses.
 Encouraging the general public to utilize the capacity of the colleges when
they want to give out projects.
Partnership
The Osun State Board for Technical Education has at different times and
for different purposes collaborated with the following agencies while
executing one project or the other:

 Industrial Development Fund (ITF)
 Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN Commission)
