Europe, EAP asserts forcefully its political voice to advocate and lobby for children’s and families’
rights and defend the professional role of the Paediatrician in the Community and at the hospital”.

EAP-UEMS SP : THE OFFICIAL POLITICAL VOICE OF CHILDREN
AND PAEDIATRICIANS THROUGHOUT EUROPE
The European Academy of Paediatrics is the UEMS – European Union Medical Specialists Paediatric
Section - and as such, represents the official political voice for both children and paediatricians
throughout Europe.
EAP members come from 32 European Economic Area countries represented by delegates from their
national paediatric societies and professional organisations. In addition Associated European
members and observers, representing National Associations of Medical Specialists and European
Specialist/Scientific societies are part of the EAP. The EAP operates at the European level to defend
and promote the interests of Medical Specialists.
The EBP - European Board of Paediatrics, which operates within EAP, ensures the highest level of
training, practice and research in paediatrics.
FOUR STRANDS OF ACTION :
1. Promote health for all children and young people in Europe, advocate and lobby for children and
families rights in Europe, alleviate suffering from diseases in infancy, childhood and adolescence up to
the completion of growth and development both within and outside of Europe.
2. Improve paediatric care in the EU both in the community and at the hospital by harmonizing,
coordinating and setting standards for paediatric education and training, paediatric care and
paediatric research throughout Europe.
EAP focuses on education and training with assessment, continual medical education and professional
development comprising all the medical expertise and fields in Paediatrics EAP/UEMS-SP, Avenue de la

3. Represent the interests of paediatricians in the EU by engaging in appropriate actions to defend
the professional status and the moral and material interests of paediatricians in Europe and safeguard
at international level the title “paediatrician” and to support the free professional movement of
paediatricians through Europe.
4. Advocate a training programme for all doctors providing first-line care
The European Academy of Paediatrics strongly advocates a structured and accountable paediatric
training programme for all doctors providing first-line care to children in the community and at the

hospital and, when possible, recommends that paediatricians should be providers of paediatric
primary care.
The European Board of Paediatrics is also involved in Accreditation of Training Centers of Excellence
developing on-going negotiations with other organizations regarding a possible development of an
European Diploma.
PERMANENT COUNCILS AND RESEARCH WORKING GROUPS :
Three permanent councils are dedicated to Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Care to provide a
professional, scientific and educational forum to members with a similar interest in specific areas
within the broad field of paediatrics.
Six groups work on :
Ethics established in 1997 with over 30 papers published on ethical issues,
Rare diseases - already involved in the EU Commission Expert Group on Rare Disease,
Vaccination strongly supporting harmonization among programmes in the EU countries,
Accident prevention & advocacy for children,
Adolescent medicine and Medicines for children producing evidence-based documents and up to
date information on relevant aspects of paediatrics,
Research in Ambulatory Settings Network-EAPRASnet With over 2000 members and several papers
published, EAPRASnet sixth survey has just been sent among the entire registered paediatrician’s
network to gain and share experience dealing with the health problems of the migrant children. It has
been prepared by EAPRASnet in collaboration with EAP Advocacy Group and other international
organizations members ; a next press release will be dedicated to this issue.
The “Lancet” EAP Statement on Primary Care:
On April 18th 2015,“The Lancet” has published a fundamental and historic statement on Paediatric
Primary Care in the Community signed by the whole Executive Committee of the EAP ; the first in
Europe to assert forcefully in an official document the professional role of the Paediatrician in Primary
Care Paediatrics in the Community either as a first contact caretaker or as a supervisor of health
promotion and medical care activities for children.
