Two important rivers in Southwest Asia were the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. These rivers flowed through the region of Mesopotamia, part of the fertile crescent area between the Mediterranean Sea and Persian Gulf. Around 5000 BC, early civilizations developed in Mesopotamia along the rivers, with settlers building cities in the region of Sumer. They controlled flooding of the rivers with dikes and canals, and constructed homes, temples, and ziggurat structures from bricks. Each city had its own rulers and centered around farming outside its walls.
