GM's latest vehicle recall follows Toyota's recall of over 8 million vehicles. The widespread quality issues seen in both companies are not unique to Toyota, but rather are problems across the depressed auto industry. Complex global supply chains that are difficult to manage and supplier networks worn down from years of deep cost cutting are the underlying reasons for the quality problems, and there will likely be more recalls to come as these systemic issues remain challenges.
