WORK WITH US
FHI 360 leads the United States Agency for International Development
(USAID)-funded FIELD-Support LWA. We work with consortium partners
to advance the state-of-the-practice in microenterprise development and
microfinance and assist USAID Missions and Operating Units to implement
innovative, integrated, market-based approaches to sustainable economic
growth with poverty reduction.
Our Livelihood and Food Security Technical Assistance (LIFT II) Program
strengthens the capacity of USAID Missions, governments, and implementers
to design and implement livelihood and food security interventions to
improve households’ economic status and health. We integrate food security
and economic strengthening activities with health and nutrition ones to
support HIV and AIDS affected clients.
FHI 360 leads the Supporting Transformation by Reducing Insecurity and
Vulnerability with Economic Strengthening (STRIVE) Program. The aim
is to identify and document interventions which can sustainably increase
household incomes/assets, and how they improve (or not) the lives of
children. With our partners, we apply a diverse set of economic strengthening
approaches in savings-led finance, workforce development, and value chain
interventions.
Our Mobile Solutions Technical Assistance and Research (mSTAR) project
is a broad, flexible, and responsive technical assistance and action learning
program that fosters the adoption and scale-up of mobile money, access and
data by the poor, civil society, local government, and private sector.
FHI 360’s Workforce Multiplier Program supports the USAID Office of
Education in its learning, outreach, and technical leadership activities to
advance the achievement of Goal 2 of the USAID Education Strategy. The aim
is to improve USAID and industry capacity to deliver quality programming in
the youth workforce development arena.
Our Accelerating Strategies for Practical Innovation & Research in Eco­
nomic Strengthening (ASPIRES) project supports evidence-based, gender-
sensitive program­ming and learning to strengthen the eco­nomic capacities of
vulnerable individuals, families, and OVCs affected by HIV/AIDS, as well as key
at-risk populations. We do this through research and targeted interventions in
economic strengthening, workforce development and social protection.
FHI 360 LIVELIHOOD FOCUS AREAS
Research and Know­­­­ledge Services: FHI 360 conducts desktop and field
research, portfolio reviews, rapid assessments and other mapping activities to
inform donors of recommendations for design and strengthening livelihoods
programs. We use the data to identify strategic opportunities for investments,
and test evidence-based design to programming. We create monitoring and
evaluation frameworks, survey instruments and related tools, and conduct
rigorous impact evaluation and assessments.
Capacity Building and Program Implementation: FHI 360 provides targeted
training, technical support, and guidance to local partners to design and
implement quality, flexible livelihoods interventions. We create and facilitate
linkages among local implementers, community based economic strengthening
and food security services, and other relevant cross-sectoral entities for
sustainability and maximum impact.
Thought Leadership: FHI 360 creates, gathers, and regularly disseminates,
global and country-specific systemic learning, tools, and templates, to
stakeholders worldwide. We provide strategic guidance to clients. Our work
systematically documents lesson learned, and identifies and promotes evidence-
based good practices.

ROAD TO HOUSEHOLD RESILIENCEOUR STORY
FHI 360’s economic development and livelihoods work draws on more
than 40 years of experience and a presence in more than 60 countries to
design and deliver innovative programs. We utilize a holistic and evidence-
based approach to tailor interventions for maximum sustainable impact to
increase the economic resilience and health of vulnerable populations.
Our livelihoods activities target and integrate cross-sectoral needs in
food security, economic strengthening, health, and nutrition. FHI 360 has
implemented livelihoods programming under a range of mechanisms,
including more than $400 million to date under its Financial Integration,
Economic Leveraging, Broad-Based Dissemination and Support (FIELD-
Support) Leader with Associates (LWA) alone.
We apply lessons learned and good practices from extensive behavioral and
implementation related research to our program design and interventions.
Our demand-driven model adapts to local context needs, integrates cross-
sectoral challenges and goals, and works with individuals, households,
communities, markets, and policy level actors.
Our livelihoods work focuses particularly on at-risk populations, youth,
orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs), those affected by HIV/AIDS, and
women and girls faced with gender-based obstacles or constraints.
OUR APPROACH
We collaborate with donors and community-based programs and partners to
identify needs, design work plans, and provide direct assistance or support
services for the implementation and advancement of good practices by local
entities. Our multi-pronged approach considers three distinct component
areas for measuring individuals’ or households’ progression along a continuum
to ensure responsive, cost-effective, sustainable, and impactful actions.
By identifying where stakeholders fall on the spectrum, program
implementers can define appropriate interventions and entry points for
targeted technical assistance to address specific needs within applicable
components. This allows practitioners to link risk-reduction strategies
with growth-oriented ones. Evidence shows this approach contributes to
decreased household food insecurity, greater income and/or asset ownership,
higher school enrollment, increased utilization of healthcare services, and
reduced HIV infections.
