This document discusses flexible grouping, which is an instructional strategy that uses a range of groupings including whole class, small groups, and independent work. This allows teachers to meet different student needs. Flexible grouping creates temporary groups that change based on purpose and can include whole class instruction, small group work, or dividing the class in half. Examples are provided for how flexible grouping may be used in early elementary, intermediate, and middle school settings. Resources with more information and an example lesson plan using flexible grouping are also included.
