Key Principles of Effective Differentiation week 1 dis. 1
Analyze the five key principles of effective differentiation and discuss which of the five will be the
most difficult for you to embrace with a fluid or growth mindset.
The text shares five key principles that guide effective differentiation, which are: respectful task,
quality curriculum, flexible management, continual assessment, and building community. Also
sharing the understanding of a fluid or growth mindset, which teachers with a growth
mindset believe it is their role to do what is necessary to be a catalyst for student success and
also to enlist the student effort necessary for success (Sousa & Tomlinson, C. A., 2011). The
most difficult areas I found out of the five key principles would be continual assessment, simply
because your instruction has to be based on the differentiation assessments of each
individualized student. Your overall goal is to have all students performing at a specific level
defining their gain within the classroom; it is already understood that no one child learn at the
same level. Heres an example; you have a total of 21 students within your class, 8 of the 21
students are above where they should be academically meanwhile you have to be able to still
teach the 13 students which are struggle to reach the same level as the other students but not fall
behind with the ones which are smoothly succeeding within the classroom!
What are the obstacles you see that will inhibit implementing the principles in your current or future
educational setting?
Within my current and also future goals the only obstacles I see with this process is not being
able to successfully implement such plans in hopes of gaining a successful outcome. If not
implemented correctly such steps could be detrimental to the overall success of each student
within the class, placing them at a failing level!
Which of the five is the easiest to accept? Why?
To be completely honest I found all five key principles pretty easy to accept and follow, each
key share great examples of leadership, accountability (from the stand point of educators and
students), organization, and teamwork. These are all great principles to follow within the
classroom, making for a smoother process!
