Egypt was under foreign occupation for thousands of years until the 1952 revolution led by Naguib that overthrew foreign rule and established the first Egyptian president in thousands of years. Since then, Egypt has been ruled by a series of military presidents including Nasser, Sadat, and Mubarak who consolidated power after the revolution. For more than 50 years, the country has been governed by a military organization or the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.

Sadat initiated economic reforms in Egypt and improved relations with the West after succeeding Nasser. In 1973, he launched a surprise attack against Israel on Yom Kippur, crossing the Suez Canal and breaking through Israeli defenses. This made Sadat hugely popular in Egypt as a "Hero of the Crossing." Sadat then pursued peace negotiations, visiting Jerusalem in 1977 and negotiating the Camp David Accords in 1978, for which he won the Nobel Peace Prize. However, his separate peace with Israel alienated other Arab states and led to his assassination by Islamists in 1981.
