The king Carnestoltes and Old Quaresma were neighbors in a village - Carnestoltes loved to eat and party while Quaresma was thin and solitary. During a big village party, Carnestoltes ate so much he exploded. Afterward, Quaresma said the villagers must stay home for as many weeks as she has legs, which turned out to be seven. The villagers were hungry and bored under Quaresma's rule until Spring arrived and melted Quaresma away, allowing fun and food to return to the village.
2. Once upon a time, in a little village there lived the two most different
people in the world. They were always annoying each other.
3. One was called Carnestoltes and he was short and fat. He loved eating,
to have fun and he always laughed at everyone.
4. The other one was the Old Quaresma. She was tall and thin. She just ate bread
and she never went outside, she always stayed at home alone. She wore dark
colors, like a raven.
5. One day in the village there was a big party. People sang, drank and ate.
Everyone was wearing fancy dress. Meanwhile, old Quaresma was at home, she
was angry, she hated parties. She tought to herself: Hard times are soon to
come!
6. The party lasted days and days. Carnestoltes loved eating, so he spent the days
eating and eating. His tummy got bigger and bigger and he exploded like a bomb!
7. When people heard the BANG, everyone ran to see what
happened, but Carnestoltes had already disappeared. All that was
left of Carnestoltes was smoke and ashes.
Old Quaresma was laughing and she said
to the people of the town: Now I am the
only one who has something to eat! It is my
turn to be in charge!
8. If you want to eat : no more parties! Everyone has to stay at
home for the same amount of weeks as the number of legs I
have.
The people of the town thought that two weeks wasn¡¯t too
long.
But when the Old Quresma came out of her house, people
saw that she had seven legs!
Old Quaresma was happy because now she had the power
and everyone needed her.
9. Every Wednesday Old Quaresma gave to each citizen just a
sardine and a piece of bread. People were hungry and bored.
10. On the seventh week, a beautiful girl dressed in beautiful bright colors arrived to the
village. She was shining like the sun and she was called Spring. She brought food for
everyone. When Old Quaresma saw her, she melted like ice.
People were happy again. They started to go out again and have fun.
11. And that is how the story about two very different neighbours ends.
