This document discusses recognizing learning through experience and reflection using a method called ELD. ELD was created in Sweden to help document competencies gained through informal learning experiences. The document defines competence and explains the ELD process of documentation, conversations, and exercises to help participants reflect on situations where they demonstrated abilities. It provides suggestions for piloting ELD and visualizing learning outcomes through tools like open badges.

Letter of Competence
What is competence? As de鍖ned in the European Training Strategy (Salto Youth 2013) Competences consist of an overall system of values, attitudes and beliefs as well as skills and knowledge, which can be put into practice to manage diverse complex situations and tasks successfully. Self-con鍖dence, motivation and well-being are important pre- requisites for a person to be able to act out his/her developed competences.
What is competence? As de鍖ned in the EQF (European Quali鍖cation Framework) Competence means the proven ability to use knowledge, skills and personal, social and/or methodological abilities in work or study situations and in professional and personal development. Competence depend on the context/situation
When am I competent?
Competence Inventory Think of a situation from your work life when you do something that you enjoy doing. A situation that makes you feel good. Tell one person about your situation and work together 鍖nding three words that describes your actions from the List of Competence.

How when can the participants document?

How to start an ELD pilot ≒ Select a few participants ≒ Introduce ELD (highlight self-assessment and be transparent with the pilot status) ≒ Co-design the ELD process with participants ≒ Select low hanging fruit tools for documentation ≒ Schedule and document ELD talks ≒ Create template for 鍖nal Letter of Competence ≒ Create personal Letter of Competence ≒ together with participant
Visualize Learning Outcomes Imagine the best possible Letter of Competence - or other proof of learning - after the project Work together
Today, young peoples learning takes place in many different sectors. Open Badges is a system for connecting different learning settings and create pathways to jobs.
Further work is also necessary to analyse how new transparency tools such as open badges created by new certi鍖cation processes on digital learning should be integrated in/a complement to Europass. COM 2013:899 Report from the Commission to the European Parliament and the Council Evaluation of the Europass initiative Second evaluation of the Decision of the European Parliament and the Council on a single Community framework for the transparency of quali鍖cations and competences (Europass)
