INTRODUCTION Chemical energy in fuel converted to thermal energy by combustion or oxidation in IC Engines. The greater mass flow-rate provides more oxygen to support combustion. Supercharger is an air compressor used for forced induction of an internal combustion engine.
HISTORY In 1860, brothers Philander and Francis Marion Roots of Connersville, Indiana, patented the design for an air mover, for use in blast furnaces and other industrial applications. The world's first series-produced cars with superchargers were Mercedes 6/25/40 hp and Mercedes 10/40/65 hp. Both models were introduced in 1921 and had Roots superchargers. The world's first functional, actually tested engine supercharger was made by Dugald Clerk, in 1878, for two stroke engine. Gottlieb Daimler received a German patent for supercharging an internal combustion engine in 1885
WHAT IS SUPERCHARGING? A supercharger is an engine-driven air pump that supplies more than the normal amount of air into the intake manifold and boosts engine torque and power. The amount of force an airfuel charge produces when it is ignited is largely a function of the charge density. More Fuel + More Air = More Power cell-type compressor wheel (1), fed on one side by an ambient intake duct (2), and discharging compressed air into the intake manifold (3), he high-pressure exhaust from the exhaust manifold feeds through the duct (4), and is expelled-at lower pressures-into the tailpipe (5).
CONVENTIONAL SUPERCHARGER Power for the unit can come mechanically by a belt, gear, shaft, or chain connected to the engine's crankshaft. When power comes from an exhaust gas turbine a supercharger is known as a turbo-supercharger typically referred to simply as a turbocharger or just turbo.
LIMITATION OF CONVENTIONAL SUPERCHARGERS Consumes as much as 20% of engines total power output. Puts an added strain on engine, to compensate for extra boost and bigger explosion. Detonation is serious problem. By-passing excess of Compressed gas is necessary.
ELECTRICAL SUPERCHARGER It contains a separate electric motor to drive an axial flow fan to pressurize the intake air . Utilizes compressor powered by a 12 volt lightweight motor that can push the electric super- charger fan to an impressive 24,500 rpms in less than one second. Is capable of delivering a 5-30% boost in horsepower .
ADVANTAGES OF ELECTRICAL SUPERCHARGER Electric superchargers are less expensive than belt-driven superchargers. Electric superchargers are decoupled from an engine via an oversized energy storage. Results in different "somewhat raw" boost supplied during low revolution regime of the engine. Produces variably pressurized intake charge as per requirement.
