The first of a series of state-of-the-art reviews commissioned to mark Disasters’ 21st anniversary, this paper considers key publications on public health aspects of natural disasters, refugee emergencies and complex humanitarian disasters over the past twenty-odd years. The literature is reviewed and important signposts highlighted showing how the field has developed. This expanding body of epidemiological research has provided a basis for increasingly effective prevention and intervention strategies.
More tropical storms and typhoons are expected during the 2014 season as a consequence of an increased El Nino effect in the Pacific. Neoguri is expected to become 2014’s first super typhoon on Monday. Okinawa will likely see the worst impacts from the storm Monday night with rainfall rates of 50 mm (2 inches) or greater per hour at times, sustained winds as high as 260 kph (160 mph) with occasional gusts of 315 kph (195 mph). Potential disaster agents (aka hazards) of a typhoon include the following:wind field [cat 1 (55 mph) to cat 5+ (155 mph or greater)]; debris; storm surge/floods; heavy precipitation/floods; landslides (mudflows); coastal erosion. Background: Applied epidemiologists are increasingly working in areas of insecurity and active conflict to define the health risks, suggest feasible means to reduce these risks and, monitor the capacity and reconstruction of the public health system. In 2001, The Carter Center and the United States Institute for Peace sponsored a conference within which "Violence and Health" was discussed and a working group on applied epidemiology formed. The group was tasked to describe the skills that are essential to effective functioning in these settings and thereby provide guidance to the applied epidemiology training programs.
Methods: We conducted a literature review and consultation of a convenience sample of practitioners of applied epidemiology with experience in conflict areas.
Results and conclusions: The health programs designed to prevent and mitigate conflict are in their early stages of implementation and the evaluation measures for success are still being defined. The practice of epidemiology in conflict must occur within a larger humanitarian and political context to be effective. The skills required extend beyond the normal epidemiological training that focuses on the valid collection and interpretation of data and fall into two general categories: (1) Conducting a thorough assessment of the conflict setting in order to design more effective public health action in conflict settings, and (2) Communicating effectively to guide health program implementation, to advocate for needed policy changes and to facilitate interagency coordination. These are described and illustrated using examples from different countries.
The document discusses different English grammar concepts including prepositions, adverbs, and how adverbs are used with the verb "to be". It also provides examples of conversations that could occur while shopping. Prepositions show location or time. Common adverbs include always, usually, often, sometimes, seldom, rarely, never. Adverbs modify verbs and subjects. When used with "to be", adverbs provide additional meaning about habits or tendencies. An example shopping conversation is provided to practice English.
Knowledge From Cyclone Disasters, Which Occur Annually In Parts Of The Pacific And Indian Oceans, Is Enough To Make Any Nation Susceptible To Cyclones Adopt And Implement Policies That Will Facilitate Its Disaster Resilience. The people who know: 1) what to expect (e.g., storm surge, high-velocity winds, rain, flash floods, and landslides,), 2) where and when it will happen, and 3) what they should (and should not) do to prepare will survive. A keynote addressing the opportunities and challenges of working with the Millennial Generation in business. Some things we have learned from the trenches.
This document discusses strategic management and provides examples to illustrate key concepts. It introduces the "Parable of John Smith" to explain strategy, though does not elaborate on the parable. It contrasts two views of firm behavior - the economist view which sees structure determining conduct and performance, versus the strategist view which sees conduct determining structure and winning. It categorizes firms as rule makers, rule takers, or rule breakers based on their size and profitability. Finally, it outlines the characteristics of strategic, administrative, and operational decisions within firms and provides examples of strategic decisions and their attributes.
Mount Sinabung, an inactive volcano located in North Sumatra, Indonesia, erupted multiple times in late 2013, prompting evacuations of nearby villages. After being dormant for 400 years, Sinabung erupted in August 2010 and has had increasing activity since, including eruptions in September and October 2013 that forced the evacuation of over 3,500 villagers within 3 km of the volcano each time. The largest eruption was on November 3, 2013, when the volcano sent an ash plume 7,000 feet into the air, prompting another 1,500 people to evacuate within 3 km of the volcano. Indonesian authorities subsequently increased the alert level for Sinabung.
This document provides financial and operational information about Company X for the years 2013 and 2014. It indicates that the company has maintained its 10% market share and 112% price relative to competitors during this period. While its return on capital employed has decreased slightly from 50% to 48%, its plant and equipment, number of employees, and sales per employee have increased. The document poses the strategic question of whether one would invest in the company based on this information.
The document discusses lessons learned about disaster resilience from past floods in Algeria. It emphasizes that preparedness for all likely flood hazards is essential to building disaster resilience. This includes prohibiting construction in floodplains and having timely emergency response. Notable floods in Algeria include one in November 2001 in Algiers that killed over 600 after 2 years of drought and heavy rainfall, and another in October 2008 in Gardaia Province that killed 30 after several days of heavy rain.
The typhoon impacted Bohol, where a 7.2 magnitude earthquake left thousands homeless in October. Damages and casualties are expected to increase as assessments proceed. Presentation courtesy of Dr. Walter Hays, Global Alliance for Disaster Reduction
The document provides tips for designing effective PowerPoint presentations, emphasizing that presentations should be big, simple, clear, progressive, and consistent. Key tips include using large font sizes that are easy to read from a distance, limiting the number of words, lines and fonts used per slide, using colors and formatting consistently, and structuring the presentation in a progressive manner from simple to complex.
WHAT IS HAPPENING? AIRLINES ON RED ALERT AFTER VOLCANIC ERUPTION IN ICELAND. After a week of seismic activity rattled the uninhabited area 200 miles (320 kilometers) east of the capital of Reykjavik with thou-sands of earthquakes, Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano began erupting Saturday (Aug. 23rd) under the country's largest glacier. An Iceland volcanologist said it was not clear when, or if, the eruption would melt through the ice — which is between 100 and 400 meters (330 feet and 1,300 feet) thick — and send steam and ash into the air. On Saturday, Icelandic authorities declared a no-fly zone of 100 nautical miles by 140 nautical miles around the eruption, but did not shut the country's airspace. An eruption at the Katla volcano could be disastrous, both for Iceland and other nations. Presentation courtesy of Dr. Walter Hays, Global Alliance for Disaster Reduction
This document outlines a strategic planning guide divided into four parts: 1) how to create a strategic plan, 2) how to implement a strategic plan, 3) how to present a strategic plan, and 4) how to obtain and customize presentation slides. Part 1 on creating a strategic plan provides a template and guidance on sections for the background, overall strategic plan, detailed strategic plan, product portfolio, strategy, markets, competition, leadership, assets, forecasts, and implementation. Part 2 covers implementing the strategic plan. Part 3 focuses on presenting the strategic plan effectively. Part 4 describes how to access and modify slides to support the presentation.

NOTABLE SEVERE WINDSTORM EVENTS AND DISASTERS OF 2014. November 30th marked the official end of a quiet 2014 Atlantic Basin hurricane season. There were eight named storms, six of which were hurricanes, with only two (Edouard and Gonzalo) becoming major storms. The Atlantic basin, which includes the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, produced the fewest tropical cyclones and fewest named storms since 1997. November 30th marked the official end of a very active 2014 Eastern Pacific hurricane season– the most active season since 1992.There were 20 named storms, the most in 22 years, peaking 2-3 years after El Niño . Of those named storms, 14 became hurricanes, with nine of them developing into major hurricanes. In general, meteorologists believe that El Niño conditions suppress hurricane activity in the Atlantic and increase it in the Pacific. A new study suggests that there may be a delayed reaction, with peak hurricane activity in the northeastern Pacific happening two or three years after an El Niño peak.
