For her internship, she worked with the American Ireland Fund in Boston where she helped with accounting, IT, communications, and event management. She organized sponsorship for events with 200-1,100 guests and traveled to locations in the US as part of her work. Through this experience, she learned the importance of time management, communication, and interpersonal skills in the workplace. 1. Emma McMullan, currently studying BA Gnó agus Gaeilge talks about her
experience on the Intra Programme as part of her degree
Where are you from?
Santry, Dublin
Why did you choose the BA Business and Irish over other courses?
I wasn’t able to put a sentence together when I started in secondary school, but after spending
5 years in the Gaeltacht as a student and then as a Leader and then Head Leader, I wanted to
keep the language.
2. Outline what you thought about the course
Its a small class but I like it – everyone knows each other and the lecturers are always happy to
help and give advice in relation to careers.
Describe your experience with your Intra placement.
I worked as an intern with a not for profit organisation, The American Ireland Fund with
headquarters in Boston. I was dealing with accounting, information technology, grants,
communications and event management. I spent most of the year dealing with event
management with the Executive Director. I had to organise the sponsorship for four big events
which between 200 and 1,100 guests attended. I really enjoyed the events and I had
opportunities to travel to Nantucket and Cape Cod as part of the my work, as well as spending
a week in the New York office on invitation from the Chief Executive Officer. In the
3. communications department, I was put in charge of bringing in over 100 adverts from
companies to develop a magazine for an event. From all this experience I learned about the
importance of time management, effective communication and interpersonal skills in the
workplace.
Anything else that you would like to add?
Anybody who has the choice to do Intra should really consider doing it. It’s a great
opportunity to improve your work skills as well as developing your CV before your career
starts.
