Smiley faces were introduced in 1982 by Scott Fahlman at Carnegie Mellon University as the first emoticon, using a colon and hyphen to form a smiling face. While the original smiley face remains popular, many other emoticon faces have been introduced over the past 30 years to convey emotions through text-based communication like SMS and IM. Emoticons allow people to include facial expressions that are important for full conversation but are not possible through text alone.
