Energy is something we as a race are
using ever day, but are we fully aware
of all the issues with it?

 Have a better understanding of current energy
and resources.
 Look at the positives and the negatives of
“Cleaner” energies
 Explore the future of energy resources.

 Discussion task: 5min.
 In your groups starting with coal a as raw
product how does it generate electricity?

 Aside solar power all energy is produced is
using a turbine.
 Turning water into steam which pushes the
turbine and generate electricity.
 Wind and hydro already have a force to push
each turbine.

 The Uk per day we use: 6500 megawatts

 Per 1 megawatt is equal to 1000000 watts

 Per year we use 2.4 gigawatts of energy each
gigawatt is equal to 1000000000 watts, this is
expected to rise to 4.0 by 2020

 Nuclear reactors: Depending on the size of the
reactor about 1500/3000MW’s of electricity
 Wind Farms: On average (due to wind)
1.7MW’s
 Coal: On average 325MWs

Per Day!

 212 Million of C02 are released into the
atmosphere each year by Britain (cars as well)
 To put this into perspective:
 One ton of Co2 takes up the same space as two
buses side by side stacked onto two other buses
side by side.

 In your groups you have a pack with a specific
energy resource. You have 15 minutes:
 Come up with reasons as to why your energy
should be the way forward in energy
production. Then present argument to the rest
of the groups.
 Each other team will be allowed to ask one
question each about your energy.
 Team to convince myself and Alison receives a
prize.

 Storage!
 Going back to your SDS, you will have listened
to Donald Sadoway speak about the
production of energy and how it is a constant
and not stored which causes a lot of waste.
 If we could figure out how to store our energy
we wouldn’t be using as much, only using it
when we need it.
 Fuel cells are looking at this directly but as
previously discussed aren’t at a stage near
completion

 Energy is now a product we cannot live
without, however the means in which we
create our energy is not adequate for the
amount of power we are spending. It would
seem we are going to dry out the resources we
are using and then turn to find an alternative
instead of the other way round which would
benefit everyone.
