HISTORY
THE GALLERY WAS ONCE A SCHOOL CALLED DUNAM PILLAY, THAT TAUGHT
QURANIC LESSONS AS WELL AS MALAY, ARABIC, MALABAR, TAMIL, HINDI
AND ENGLISH. IT WAS THEN CONVERTED INTO A BURIAL PLACE FOR THE FAMILY OF
KAPITAN KELING II, NOORDIN MERICAN- AFTER HIS MOTHER PASSED
AWAY AND BURIED THERE. HE HIMSELF DIED IN 1980 AND WAS BURIED
THERE. IT WAS JUST RECENTLY RESTORED INTO A GALLERY FOR THE MALAY ARTISTS
ASSOCIATION AND WAS NAMED AS THE PENANG MALAY ARTIST
ASSOCIATION ART GALLERY. HOWEVER, THE ASSOCIATION WAS DEREGISTERED IN
2010. THE GALLERY IS STILL RUNNING NOW, AS THE ARTISTS THAT OWN IT
NOW ARE TRYING HARD TO REVIVE IT AND RESTORING THE APPRECIATION
TOWARDS ART IN SOCIETY TODAY.
THE BUSINESS WAS STARTED TO HELP MALAY ARTISTS TO EXCEL IN THE ART INDUSTRY
AS WELL AS EDUCATING SOCIETY TO APPRECIATE ART. SINCE THE
ASSOCIATION WAS DEREGISTERED IN 2010, AND THE RISE OF NEW
MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERIES, THE POPULARITY OF THE
GALLERY HAS DECREASED.

THE CURRENT STATE OF THE
BUSINESS ITSELF. THE GALLERY HAS A
VERY TRADITIONAL FEEL TO IT. THE
BUILDING ITSELF, THE INTERIOR, AND
THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE ART
PIECES ARE DULL AND NOT EYE-
CATCHING.
THE GALLERY ITSELF ALSO DOES NOT HAVE
AN OFFICIAL WEBSITE WHICH MAKES IT
HARD FOR PEOPLE TO KEEP UP WITH IT.
