An engineer's notebook is a bound book where engineers formally document all work related to a specific design project in chronological order. It includes ideas, research, sketches, calculations, experiments, observations, and conclusions. Maintaining an organized notebook provides proof of origin for patent purposes and ensures project continuity if members leave. What is an Engineers Notebook? An engineers notebook is a book in which an engineer will formally document, in chronological order, all of his/her work that is associated with a specific design project. Each engineer has his/her own engineers notebook within which he/she records (by hand) his/her project ideas, research, interviews, sketches, calculations, experiments, observations, conclusions, and anything else that is related to a specific design project.
The engineers notebook is sometimes referred to by other titles: engineering notebook engineering or engineers log book engineers journal inventors notebook It should be noted that an engineers notebook is not the same as a portfolio . What is an Engineers Notebook?
An engineers notebook records Written ideas Sketches (preferably annotated) Work session summaries Research findings Interview information: who was contacted, when, and what was discussed or learned

Why Keep an Engineers Notebook? Engineering Research and Development organizations usually require their engineers to keep a running record of their activities. An engineers notebook is recognized as a legal document that is used in patent activities to Prove the origin of an idea that led to a solution Prove diligence in turning the idea into a solution Prove when an idea became a working solution (reduced to practice).
