This document outlines the journaling assignments for an English class. Each class period will begin with 5-10 minutes of freewriting in response to prompts from assigned readings. Students are expected to continue developing these prompts outside of class, with at least two pages of response per prompt by midterm and final grading. In addition to prompted assignments, students can use the journal for notes from class and personal reflections. The schedule lists specific exercises and due dates for short essays and final projects throughout the semester.

ENGL 293 Journal Assignments
Each class period will begin with 5-10 minutes of writing time. These freewrites will be guided by
prompts given in class. For the most part these prompts will come from one of the Ways In
exercises at the end of chapters in Writing True or Try It exercises at the end of chapters in Tell
it Slant. These writings must be composed by hand in your dedicated class journal. Make sure to
date your entries and make it clear which prompt you are responding to.
You will be expected to continue with each prompt outside of class on your own. By the time you
turn in your journals for midterm and final grading, each prompt should have at least two full
pages of response.
In addition to these prompted assignments, feel free to use your notebook as exactly thata
place for notes. Notes from class, notes from the world, notes toward future writing. Just make it
clear what is what for the purposes of grading.
