Robinson Crusoe discovers a single footprint on the beach while walking towards his boat. He is surprised and confused by the lone footprint as he searches the shore but finds no other footprints. Upon closer examination, he determines it is clearly the print of a human foot. Unable to explain its origin, he becomes increasingly frightened and returns home hastily, looking over his shoulder at every bush and tree, thinking each one might be a man.

I listened; I looked around me; I could neither here nor see anything. I went up higher to look down; I went up the shore and down the shore, but it was no good; I could find no other footprint but that one. I went to it again to see if there were any more footprints and to tell if it had been my imagination.

I stayed along time thinking , but became more and more confused. At last I returned home very frightened, looking behind me after every two or three steps ,mistaking every bush and tree to be a man.
