Editor's Notes

  1. welcome bio teaching how many of you think using technology is about as complicated as the title of my talk today? honestly, its not!! who sends emails? who creates Word documents? if you can do these things, then you can use English360 just as easily no need for technical expertise. title: redefine ** how teachers can quickly and easy create courses by combining activities and tasks of their choice from a broad range of CUP ELT titles with lesson content they have created themselves.** am here today to say theres a new way we can do this. NOT HERE!!! Q: what resources do you currently use in the classroom? Any internet? Q: when did you last use the Internet yourself / what for?
  2. English360s been developed to make it easier for you to put together a personalised course for your learners, selecting activities from over 30 CUP titles, currently, with your own lessons. so, what is English360? English360s an online learning platform. provides tools for you to choose from to help you create and deliver courses to suit your teaching context and learners, as well as an online filing cabinet that contains resources you can quickly access, edit and add to can also track learners progress as said before, doesnt require technical knowledge or that you download any software. a wide range of content types not just texts and pictures, but also video, audio, links to websites, pdfs and interactive activities. English360 originally promoted to BE/ESP teachers, due to teaching background of Cleve Miller, the founder, but it can be used for general English teaching, too. many on the team are teachers I personally have more experience of teaching general English, but some of my colleagues have a mainly BE or ESP background.
  3. we can far more easily and immediately provide distance learners with materials (no more postage costs or books getting lost in the post!!) speeds up the process of learners submitting work for us to review, too enables us to keep an automatically-retained digital record of everything that our learners have done
  4. @@@@@DELIVERY@@@@@ English360 provides you with CHOICES as to how to deliver course content: high-quality printouts of all course content can be given out in class with access to the Internet, we can reduce the labour-intensive process of supplementing course books with cut and paste worksheets. can provide our learners with consistently professionally-presented handouts handouts can be revised, added to, re-sequenced at any point
  5. these new digital tools enable us to bridge the divide between the classroom and independent learning beyond the classroom for homework and provision of supplementary materials freeing up F2F classes for skills development (speaking) and completion of performance-based tasks
  6. at English360, we are teachers who have devised the platform for teachers. How to create courses? we believe in collaboration with others (publishers, independent authors, colleagues, your learners) to enable the courses you develop to be highly customised to meet your learners needs efficiently and effectively, and to benefit from resources that others may have created that can either be used as they are, or customised for your learners
  7. rather than working towards generalised goals, prepare learners for tasks that they will be required to perform, either within their company, their forthcoming studies or a post that they are being trained up to fill. base activities around genuine materials provided by the company or educational establishment the learner belongs to
  8. just reflect for a minute on why were all here for our learners at the heart of everything we do All ELT is ESP learners at the centre, in all contexts (BE, GE, ESP; school/uni students, businessmen, professionals or job hunters) so whilst there may be a common thread in terms of a shared objective (school exams, professional training, personal interest/development, focussing on a particular skill), each learners needs are particular to them role of the teacher? paradigm of Teacher as facilitator of learning teachers can, of course, teach from the front, but in my own experience, Ive found it hugely motivational when learners have taken increased responsibility for directing their own learning (experiential and authentic, etc) learners take more ownership of the learning process be guided by our learners - establish learners needs > select most appropriate content and method of delivery (to suit individual learning styles / commitments / time frame, etc)
  9. Best of both worlds combine them in one place, on English360 CUP content and own lesson plans
  10. there are many more sources from which we can and do pull in content from variety of sources current, has currency with learners, too (= motivating) as is relevant to them fresh, flexible and dynamic addressing the needs of each individual learner working together with colleagues

  12. Another example of a page of content from the Cambridge English for Nursing course. English360 means we can do away with the scissors and glue, cutting and pasting to make worksheets, and photocopying repeatedly for our learners.
  13. Another example of a reading activity from Cambridge English for Nursing on English360 using text/image as stimulus for discussion On this scale, using English360 would rate a 0 on the pain threshold!
  14. REPLACE OR CORRECT WRONG ANSWERS SO THAT THEYRE RIGHT!!!!!
  15. demo
  16. drawing on all of these sources, we can provide highly personalised materials to our learners, targeting each individuals needs, and helping them to achieve their specific learning objectives, whether this is in media, medicine, education or nursing, for example.
