This document describes modelling state transitions in dairy cows based on their somatic cell count (SCC). It begins with background on milk recording data collection, including SCC which indicates mastitis levels. States are defined as Low, High, Dry. A multinomial logit model is used to model the transition between states based on previous states. The model is coded in WinBUGS. Validation data from 100 herds is used to test the model.

1) The study uses milk recording data from over 8 million cow recordings to develop a model predicting calving to conception intervals based on milk yield and composition metrics like fat percentage, protein percentage, and fat to protein ratio. 2) The results show that cows producing more milk at peak lactation synthesize less protein and lactose and mobilize more fat in early lactation, leading to longer conception intervals. 3) Percentages of protein and lactose showed stronger associations with probability of conception compared to fat percentage and fat to protein ratio, likely because they are less dependent on seasonal variations.

The butterfat to protein ratio is widely used in the UK as a marker of energy balance, but it may not be a good predictor of reproductive performance in dairy cows. This study used milk recording data from over 1 million lactations in England and Wales to predict calving to conception intervals. The results showed that the fat to protein ratio was a poorer predictor than the individual components of butterfat and protein. This is because both butterfat and the ratio vary significantly with time of year due to feeding effects, which cannot be accounted for without better data. Individual components like protein and lactose on the first two test days were better predictors of conception than the composite ratio.
