ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS -ISO 14001:2015 (CLAUSE 6.1.2)
Within the defined scope of the environmental management system, the organization shall determine the
environmental aspects of its activities, products and services that it can control and those that it can influence,
and their associated environmental impacts, considering a life cycle perspective.
When determining environmental aspects, the organization shall take into account:
a) change, including planned or new developments, and new or modified activities, products and services;
b) abnormal conditions and reasonably foreseeable emergency situations.
The organization shall determine those aspects that have or can have a significant environmental impact, i.e.
significant environmental aspects, by using established criteria.
The organization shall communicate its significant environmental aspects among the various levels and
functions of the organization, as appropriate.
The organization shall maintain documented information of its:
— environmental aspects and associated environmental impacts;
— criteria used to determine its significant environmental aspects;
— significant environmental aspects.
NOTE Significant environmental aspects can result in risks and opportunities associated with either adverse
environmental impacts (threats) or beneficial environmental impacts (opportunities).
DOCUMENTING ASPECTS AND
IMPACT
Documenting environmental aspects and impacts is essential for organizations
aiming to understand, manage, and control their environmental performance. By
maintaining a comprehensive record of all relevant aspects—such as activities,
products, or services that interact with the environment—and their corresponding
impacts, both positive and negative, organizations can pinpoint areas for
improvement and reduce potential risks.
An Aspect and Impact Register serves as a structured tool to identify and assess
environmental impacts, prioritize actions to address them, and manage them
effectively. This register is crucial for tracking and monitoring progress,
communicating environmental performance to stakeholders, and ensuring
compliance with environmental regulations and standards.
Moreover, keeping detailed documentation can help organizations uncover
opportunities for cost savings, improve resource efficiency, and foster innovation.
Understanding the environmental impact of their operations enables organizations
to adopt measures that minimize pollution, save energy, and reduce waste.
In summary, maintaining an Aspect and Impact Register is a fundamental step in
managing environmental performance and promoting sustainable business
practices.

HOW TO IDENTIFY, DETERMINE AND ESTABLISH ASPECTS
? Identify all organizational activities, processes, and functions that
could impact the environment, health and safety, or other key
business areas.
? Determine the activity or process, assess its potential impacts, such
as emissions, waste production, resource consumption, or health
and safety risks.
? Establish the identified aspects and impacts into a register, detailing
each aspect alongside its associated impact. This provides a clear,
comprehensive view of the organization’s environmental, health
and safety, and other significant impacts.
? Categorize these aspects and impacts based on their significance
and risk level to prioritize actions and allocate resources effectively
for managing the most critical ones.
? Regularly review and update the aspect-impact register to keep it
accurate and relevant, ensuring that the organization can
continually enhance its environmental, health, and safety
performance.
6
SIGNIFICANT ASPECTS
Some examples of significant environmental aspects include:
?Air pollution: The mixing of harmful substances into the atmosphere, which
can cause health problems and reduce quality of life
?Water quality: An important aspect of environmental health, which can be
negatively impacted by pollutants
?Biodiversity: An important aspect of the environment that is linked to
human life
?Emissions: The release of substances into the atmosphere
?Discharges: The release of substances into water
?Soil contamination: The contamination of soil
?Consumption: The use of raw materials, natural resources, and energy
?Waste generation: The creation of waste
?Land consumption: The use of land
7
DETERMINING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACTS
? Severity: What is the size and magnitude (extent) of the impact such as
whether it is localized or widespread. How long-lasting the impact is, whether
it is temporary or permanent.
? Likelihood: How often the impact occurs, and whether it is a one-time
occurrence or ongoing (Probability of Occurrence).
? Occurrence: The timing of the impact in relation to other activities or events,
as well as the timing of when it occurs.
? Cumulative Effects: The combined impacts of multiple activities or projects,
which can amplify the significance of each individual impact.
? Requirement : What are legal, organizational goal, objectives and other
criteria applies to the aspect.
With above considerations, the significance of impacts can be assessed, and appropriate
measures can be implemented to minimize negative impacts and to enhance positive ones. This
approach helps in mitigating and managing the risks effectively and, ensuring sustainable
outcomes.
EVALUATING SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT
Score Likelihood
5
Highly Likely: The risk with 91% or more likelihood falls under this
category
4
Likely: The risk has 61-90% chance of occurring. These risk need
regular attention and consistent monitoring
3
Possible: The risk may happen about half of the time with likelihood
between 41-60%
2
Unlikely: The risk that has relatively low chances of occurring with
likelihood between 10-40%
1 Highly unlikely: The risk that has low probability of occurring.
Score Severity
1 Negligible: The risk is so small that it can be ignored
2
Low: The risk is insignificant and can be managed with routine
procedures
3
Medium: The risk is significant but manageable with additional
controls or mitigations
4
Medium High: The risk is severe and requires immediate attention
and action
5 High: The risk is intense and needs to be addressed
