Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related events in populations and the application of this study to control health problems. There are two broad types of epidemiology: descriptive epidemiology, which examines diseases that have occurred; and analytic epidemiology, which tests hypotheses generated in the descriptive phase to further understand determinants of health events.
