The European Commission proposes EU legislation, negotiates trade deals with other countries on behalf of the EU, and oversees the EU budget. It is also responsible for ensuring EU laws are properly applied and can refer countries to the European Court of Justice. The Commission consists of one Commissioner from each EU member state who are each responsible for specific policy areas.
