1) The music video for "New York" by Paloma Faith conforms to several conventions of music videos, such as matching the visuals to the lyrics and music. However, it challenges conventions by not including dancing or sexualizing the artist to better match the despondent tone of the song.
2) The magazine advertisement uses conventions like prominently featuring the artist's image and including the album and artist names. However, it also includes social media information atypical of magazine ads to better target younger audiences.
3) The digipak represents the genre through its visuals like using bright colors for pop. But atypical facial expressions subvert expectations and images from the music video provide further recognition to

2. Music Video New York Paloma Faith
In terms my music video, the way in which I have conformed to the stereotypical conventions of a music
video, is by following Andre Goodwins key features of a music video. For instance Goodwin's argues that
one of the conventions of a music video is the relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. For instance
in a particular scene within my music video, there is shot of a glass of water with a red liquid being poured
into it and this reflects the lyrics she poisoned your sweet mind. Another of Goodwins conventions is
there should be a relationship between the music and the visuals of the music video. The song New York
by Paloma Faith is about a womans boyfriend who leaves her and moves to New York, although she
personifies the city of New York as another woman. In term of my video, the visuals match up to the
music literally. For instance the narrative in my music is about a woman losing her boyfriend to another
woman who lives in New York . In terms of the music video, the other woman can also be interpreted as
(antagonist) is a metaphor for New York.
Furthermore, Goodwin argues the demands of the of the record label will include the need for lots of
close up s of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recurs across their style of work. In terms
of my music video there are a umber of close ups of the artists, as within the narrative of the video the
artist is also the antagonist.
However in terms of subverting the conventions of a music video, according to Goodwin a number of
video include an aspect of voyeurism in which the artist is portrayed in a sexual way. This was not shown in
my video due to the fact that the artist was supposed to be portrayed as heartbroken and depressed. If
she was sexualised it would of subverted our intentions. In addition many music videos include scenes in
which the artist is dancing, with a umber of back up dancers, this also was not available in our video. The
reason for this was because the tone of the song was despondent and despairing. Due to the fact that it
was about the breakdown of a relationship the idea of including a dance sequence will undermine the
message being put forward.
3. Magazine Advert
The colour scheme consists of three main colours black, white
and red. These colors contract with each other. For instance red
connotes danger, passion and seduction. However the color
white contrasts with this as it signifies purity. Whereas black
signifies dark and the unknown. This connotation could all
together reflect the content of the album.
The picture of her takes up the
majority of the poster shes a
solo artist important for her
to be the main image
In terms of the image
Alicias make up is slightly
heavy, striking, its dark and
links in the with the color
scheme of the poster
Her hair is straight and
portion of it is slicked back ,
and this puts more of an
emphasis on her facial
features
Her somber facial coupled
with her black dazzling
make up and black clothing
could reflect the idea that
songs on the album may
cover serious issues .
Her jewelry is small and
minimal therefore it doesnt
take the focus away from her
face.
Her initials are presented in the
corner of the poster, in the color
red which connotes danger and
passion which could be mirrored
in the content of the album.
The name of the album and artist
are in bold and in capitals due to
fact that this is essential
information for the audience.
Further information shown on the
poster consists of some songs that
are in the album and some of the
other artists that are present
Other necessary information on
the advertisement is the date
that the album is available are
the record labels and distributors,
and also social networking sites
the artist is on.
In the majority of magazine adverts, the image of the artist takes up the majority of the
poster. This convention has been reflected within my poster for Do you want the truth or
something beautiful as the picture of the artist is the main image on the poster, in front of a
faded image of the city of New York to reflect the single. . In addition to this the artist on the
front of our magazine cover is wearing dark make up and this slightly contrasts with the pink
background which allows her to stand out more.
In addition the name of the artist and album are prominent titles on traditional album
posters. For example in terms of Alicia Keys magazine advert the initials of her name are in
red in the corner of the poster (a recognisable symbol for herself) and her actual name and
name of the album. This is then shown on my advert as the name of the artist and the album
name is present in large font on the poster, the colour white so that it stands out from the
background.
Moreover a convention typically seen on magazine adverts, are the dates available, featured
artists, reviews and record label information. However we subverted some of these
conventions, for instance, although record label information is on our poster we also
included information about iTunes, twitter and Facebook. Due the fact that in society now,
digital technology and social networking sites are in prominent use, and as our target
audience are pop fans; which the majority of are young people, they will be able to access
these websites to gain more information about the artist.
4. Digipak
In terms of the conventions of the digipak, it is clear that you have to represent the genre
and the artist on the front cover of your digipak. For instance FAME by Chris brown the
genre of the album as a whole consists of R&B, Hip Hop, Pop and Dance. All these genres
are presented within the front cover art. The hip hop and R&B is presented through the
graffiti aspect of the design. However the pop and dance is shown by the bright colours
that a re used along with the repetition of pictures with portray the effect of a mosaic, as
each mosaic contains a different picture of brown (although some are repeated) it shows
the different sides to him rather than just the Chris Brown who is in the limelight. This
convention is shown within my digipak, for example the genre of pop is represented by the
use of the bright colours that are associated with pop artists i.e. pink, this is further
reinforced by the fact that New York skyline is also pink. Although, some conventions of
the genre are subverted, as the facial expression the Artist is one of despondency and
slight confusion, as opposed the pleasurable light hearted tone of pop music and albums.
Another way in which we have subverted the conventions of the typical albums is through
the way we have included images from the music video in the album, to reflect the tone of
the album and to give further recognition to the hit single.
Other conventions that were included were, the colour scheme being continued
throughout the album and idea of having the song titles on the back of the album.
However the multitude of images of the artist that surround the digipak are slightly
unconventional. Although the majority of albums have pictures of their artist throughout,
there are many more in our album. Due to the fact that Paloma Faith is a rather unknown
artist therefore by included a lot of pictures of her, her face will become well known.
