- 1. How Effective is the Combination of your Main Product and Ancillary Texts?The brief of this project was to create a teaser trailer for a horror movie as well as a promotional poster for it and the cover of a film magazine promoting it’s release.
- 2. How Effective is the Combination of your Main Product and Ancillary Texts?The first part of the brief that I attempted to do was the production of my teaser trailer. Initially I didn’t make a plan out for how everything else was to fit together. However when I attempted the plan out for my magazine cover and the promotional poster it was then when I thought through on how to make the whole project link together. For example, one of the ways I did this was by using the same type of font text In the teaser trailer as well as the promotional poster and the magazine cover.
- 3. One of the ways in how I managed to link my project together was through the poster and the teaser trailer. Some of the text that I used in the teaser trailer ‘Fairy Tale Becomes Horror’ is what I used as my tagline for the promotional poster. I believe that this is a very effective technique because the audience will remember this more as it is used in both texts. Plus it is something which they can relate to with the film. Another link between the trailer and the poster is the masked hooded people. There white masks, I believe, could be a trade mark of this project. As they are constantly seen in the trailer by adding them in the poster makes the whole link between the two more effective to the project as well as the audience. Like the white mask people, I think that the bloodied apples could be a well known trade mark for the movie as well. They are seen a number of times through the teaser trailer and they make a vibrant stand out within the promo poster. - 4. Even though there are strong links between the teaser trailer and the promotional poster I don’t think they represent each other as much as they could. As the teaser trailer was filmed in daylight, it doesn’t follow the conventions of a horror film that everything usually happens at night. Even though I have justified this and made it work in a positive way for my trailer, we don’t see this being portrayed for the poster. When I filmed the trailer I also did the photo shoot for the poster and magazine, but the way the background setting was for the promo, it was better to use Photoshop to alter the colourof the setting. This way the promotional poster looked more realistic and authentic. However even though it is not what I had in mind as a whole project, I still think the audience could make a link between the two from the text and images used.How Effective is the Combination of your Main Product and Ancillary Texts? - 5. Personally I think that the teaser trailer and the magazine cover have more of a identified link then the teaser trailer and the promotional poster. The background setting of the magazine cover is the same as in the teaser trailer. They are both set in daylight and the magazine cover background contrast has been altered so much to the fact that there is un identification of the link between the setting of both creations. Once again the font of the text is used in the teaser trailer is also used on the magazine cover. This is an important link between all three products as the audience can identify the film if they know what the title looks likes. Sight and Sound magazine usually have the characters on the front cover over the actors themselves. So with the characters that feature in the trailer are the ones on the magazine cover. For the readers of Sight and Sound they can know more about the film before they even seen it as they know who the characters are. - 6. Even though I believe that the audience can relate the magazine to the trailer quite easily I think that there may be a bit of confusion. The teaser trailer bases is of the victim girl (Victoria Lake) running and being afraid of the masked hooded people as they aim to capture her. From this we know that the masked hooded people are the villains and the girl is their victim. This may confuse the readers of Sight and Sound as they may question the image used as the cover ‘if she is afraid of them, why she resting her arm on them?’. The problem is that they will not get it as it is very vague. In my synopsis, at the end of the film Victoria Lake ends up killing some of the masked hooded people and she ends up to be a cold blooded villain just like them. However I still don’t think people would understand the image chosen for the magazine cover. - 7. Being perfectly honest, I don’t think that the promotional poster and the magazine cover hold that much in common with each other. The colour scheme is not intact together and the characters featured in the poster are smaller then the ones on the magazine which makes the link between the two harder to identify with. Plus the main character, Victoria Lake, is featured in the teaser trailer and the magazine cover but not on the poster which makes the poster quite vague to the other two products. However the font of the text between the two are in the same context which is one of the important aspects of all three products. Plus the thing that stands out in both the promo poster and the magazine cover is the masked hooded people. Their distinctive white masks make a vibrant control of the combination of the creations of the whole project. How Effective is the Combination of your Main Product and Ancillary Texts?
