Each year, large amounts of electronic waste (e-waste) are discarded, including 30 million computers in the USA and 100 million mobile phones in Europe. Recycling e-waste is environmentally friendly as it turns used materials into new products while saving energy and money. Acceptable items for recycling include batteries, cell phones, computers and accessories, printers, televisions, and DVD players. However, only 15-20% of the 50 million tons of annual e-waste is recycled, with the rest ending up in landfills. Solutions to improve recycling rates include government regulations on production and take-back programs, as well as encouraging donation and individual recycling efforts.
