This document provides information about an exam prep project involving photographing ink in water. It includes 4 photographs by different artists that inspired the creator's project. It summarizes the techniques used by artist Alberto Seveso, who pioneered photographing ink in large volumes of water in a fish tank. The creator was inspired by Seveso's clean, colorful images and plans to experiment with different ink mixtures as well as use post-processing techniques like selective coloring. A video example of the ink in water technique is also provided.
3. 4 Photographs that inspired me
1.Alberto Servstro
This photograph has inspired me for my project because
it is a very well composed and a very clean photograph,
the colors are fairly bland and do not make it too in your
face and a relaxing almost surreal image that most people
would find interesting to work out how it was taken,
another reason why it is a very relaxing image is because
the background is a beige color which is not expected but
works very well because it is not too harsh to look at and
it almost brings out the colors in the ink more because of
the contrast it creates.
5. 2.Gio
This photograph is not as well taken as Alberto’s
photograph however it is does have a more bold
color and more detail around the top compared to
Alberto’s which have a very tight crop, this
photograph has inspired me because it gives me a
view of what to expect from my initial photographs
and I can see how to further develop my
photographs for example I would get rid of some of
the drips at the bottom of the image in post
processing, this is because if you have less droplets
it makes them stand out more and makes the
photograph more interesting and visually pleasing.
7. 3.Ruslan Khaskov
This is a very different image taken using the same
technique however this artist has let the water and
the ink and taken with an extreme macro lens to get
every bubble in focus, this photograph has a lot of
bold colors because of the different colors of ink
have been use, this photograph has inspired me to
use macro lens and wait a while before taking the
photographs this is because you could get some
interesting macro shots and make the photograph
taking more efficient since you would get more
different photographs out of one batch of ink which
would save a lot of time and would mean less ink
wasted.
9. 4.Aaron Sayce
This photographs uses a different mixture ratio of
ink to water and also uses the same colours of ink
that have been mixed developing the image further
making a softer image because the streaks of ink
are finer and look almost like little threads of silk,
this photograph has inspired me to experiment with
different mixtures to get thicker and thinner lines of
ink so there would be contrast in images so they
wouldn’t look the same also using different colours
of ink at the same time bringing out more contrast
in the images
11. Artist analysis 1
Artist: Linden Gledhill
About the artist/ photograph: once it began to vibrate the ink was photographed in
very high speed jumping up and down to capture the colorful formations. It is
incredible to believe these formations are not solid sculptures but paint caught in split
second of time before it falls into a pool again. The campaign, created by creative
studio Dentsu London, features specially commissioned shots by photographer and
biochemist Linden Gledhill. He said in an interview: 'Two years ago I would never have
imagined that messing around with paint splashing from a small speaker would have
resulted in such an exceptional experience.' The images are part of a campaign to
promote Canon's Pixma Ink Printer brand.
How the photographs were created: Acrylic paint is placed over a speaker, when the
speaker is turned on it causes the paint to jump up and down because of the sound
waves, the photograph is taken while the paint is in the air, this process also causes
the paint to mix together therefore the pictures come out with a mixture of paint in
the air in a variety of colours. Pictured below is how the photographs were created
with the paint on the speaker.
13. Personal Response: These sets of photographs are very visually pleasing this is
because they combine vibrant colours with high speed photography creating an
almost surreal paint splash, this is also very good example of ingenuity by the
photographer because of the way a speaker is used to launch the paint upwards. The
set of photographs are all very different form each other, this is because the
unexpected nature of the paint splash which all matters on the frequency the speaker
is being played at causing different patterns of paint.
Inspiration: These photographs have inspired me to use a macro lens to capture acrylic
paint being launched by the speaker at various frequencies causing different patterns
in the paint, this will be done by placing a black film on top of a speaker.
37. Artist analysis 2 – Alberto Seveso
Alberto Seveso is an Italian artist specializing in illustration, graphic design
and photography. Born in Milan, Seveso currently lives and works as a
freelance artist from his hometown of Portoscuso, Sardinia, Italy. Alberto’s
artistic passion grew from an early fascination with skateboard deck graphics
and album artwork for metal bands. This led to him being one of the
pioneering artists and developed the ink in water idea further then others
had before him experimenting with different mixtures to create the
smoothest images possible, he does not rely on post processing as his
photographs are taken on such a large scale in a 3000 litre fish tank with litres
of ink used to be able to get the largest amount of detail possible it is a very
well composed and a very clean photograph, the colours are fairly bland and
do not make it too in your face and a relaxing almost surreal image that most
people would find interesting to work out how it was taken, another reason
why it is a very relaxing image is because the background is a beige color
which is not expected but works very well because it is not too harsh to look
at and it almost brings out the colors in the ink because of the contrast it
bings out.
39. His photographs have inspired me in my exam prep because of the colour and the
detail of the images as they are fairly simple to take however getting the mixture
right is very tough as there are many ways to do this form of image mainly a
mixture involving cooking oil at the ratio of 75:25 however experimenting with
this yields different results of the photographs such as some have more colour
fringing and more intricate compared to others which are fairly bold colours that
are very contrasting but lack detail, this is what made me choose this artist
because there was room to experiment with his style of images so they do not
look the same. His photographs are also critically acclaimed in the world as the
artist has his own clothing brand and has worked for various recording artists for
their album covers because of his specialisation in the photography of ink in water
therefore I know that his photographs are visually pleasing to other people as well
as myself.
The reason why I chose Seveso’s photographs as inspiration was because there
was no set technique on how to recreate them so I would not be copying the
artist idea but making it myself with my own style with my own colors and ink.
Also my exam prep was focused around how you can experiment with certain
materials in water for example oil and ink as this artist has uses, I also plan to use
more post processing compared to Seveso this is because you can take this images
furner if you use selective coloring in photoshop, I also chose this project because
it has room to expand for example one of my final ideas is to make a short video
of the ink in the water to music which means expanding on the artist idea.
41. How the images were created
• Steps to take the images – A clear fish tank is
required and it has to have a flat surface so
the ink is not diffracted by the glass and a
correct mixture of oil and water is needed so
the ink does not disperse too quickly, a pipette
is needed and a flash kit to have enough
lighting in the photograph and a backlight so
the detail comes out of the photograph in the
way Sevesto took his photographs the
technique is done well.
