Exploring Search
Engines
The Backbone of the Internet
Search Engines -
A search engine is a software system designed to
search for information on the World Wide Web. It
uses algorithms to retrieve and organize data from
web pages and other online sources based on a
user's query or search terms.
Understanding Search Engines
Example - A student wants to learn Machine Learning, so he searches the
Machine learning tutorial in the search engine. The student gets a list of
links that contain the tutorial links of machine learning.
A search engine is an internet-based software program whose main task is
to collect a large amount of data or information about what is on the internet,
then categorize the data or information and then help user to find the
required information from the categorized information.
Search engines serve as the primary gateway to the vast
amount of information available on the internet. They
enable users to find relevant data quickly and efficiently.
Gateway to Information:
They play a crucial role in the digital economy,
influencing e-commerce and online advertising.
Businesses rely on search engine optimization (SEO) to
improve visibility and drive traffic.
Economic Impact:
Importance of Search Engine Marketing in the
Digital World
Search engines democratize access to knowledge,
allowing people from all walks of life to learn and
educate themselves on a wide range of topics.
Knowledge Dissemination:
They shape public opinion by determining the
visibility of news, articles, and other content, thus
influencing social discourse and cultural trends..
Social Influence:
In 1994 the first recognized crawler search engine was developed.
WebCrawler was the first search engine to provide full text search. In 1994,
Brian Pinkerton, a computer science student at the University of
Washington, create WebCrawler with a database of 4000 sites.
Unlike its predecessors, it let users search for any word in any web page,
which became the standard for all major search engines since. It was also
the first one to be widely known by the public..
World Wide Web 1994
Evolution of Search Engines
In June 1995, America Online
(AOL), acquired WebCrawler.
But just over 2 years later in
April 1997 WebCrawler was
sold by AOL to Excite.
WebCrawler still exists today
but it no longer uses its own
database to display results.
2018 was the last time the
engine had a face lift and new
spider logo
AltaVista was launched in 1994 and established
itself as the standard among search engines for a
number of years. It was the first with its own index.
Alta Vista continued to be prominent in the search
market for a long time because it used a robot
called Scooter that was particularly powerful.
These days, AltaVista.com redirects to Yahoo!
Lycos came onto the market in the summer of
1994. The function and the principle were
ground-breaking, because Lycos not only could
search documents, but also had one algorithm
which measured the frequency of the search
term on the page and also looked at the
proximity of the words to each other.
HotBot was launched using a new links
strategy of marketing, claiming to index the
entire web weekly, more often than competitors
like AltaVista to give its user far fresher and
more up to date results. At the time their claims
were that they were the most complete Web
index online with over 54 million documents in
their database.
YAHOO! was founded in 1994 by David Filo
and Jerry Yang and was initially a pure web
directory.
Yahoo was also very prominent in the world of
online chat. Before instant messaging
services, the 1990s web was full of chat room,
with Yahoo chat being on of the most popular
options due to their wide choice of subject
matter chat rooms.
The name Backrub came from how the search
engine analyzed backlinks pointing to websites to
understand their importance for ranking purposes.
Page and Brin assembled Backrub using leased
servers and parts they bought at discounted prices. It
operated on Stanfords network for over a year,
eventually processing around 10,000 queries a day.
The Google homepage launched in 1998 with a basic, uncluttered
interface showing just a Google! logo, search bar and Search
button.
Bing was launched by Microsoft in 2009 as the successor
to live.com (Live Search) in order to finally be able to
compete with Google and has increasingly included social
media content since 2012. In October 2010 Bing started
been working with Facebook . Bings integration with
Facebooks search engine was seen as a potentially
important way that Microsoft could compete with Google.
Alongside Facebooks own semi-programmable search
queries, users could plug in web searches that would return
structured information like the local weather.
DuckDuckGo was developed by Gabriel Weinberg and
went live in 2008. This search engine with the unusual
name is a combination of a meta search engine and its own
web crawler. The search results are delivered from over
400 external sources, such as Bing, Yandex, Yahoo Search
BOSS or Wikipedia. In addition, there are the results of our
own web crawler called DuckDuckBot, which regularly
crawls the web itself for information. According to
Wikipedia, on November 13, 2017, there were more than
20 million searches in one day via DuckDuckGo.
 The Russian search engine Yandex
(亊仆亟亠从) was founded in 1997 and, it
is a company based in Amsterdam
and has its operational headquarters
in Moscow. There are also branches in
Belarus, Switzerland, the USA, Turkey
and Germany.
 Baidu is the leading search
engine in China. Baidu is the
most popular search engine in
China with a staggering
84.26% of the market share.
Bing hold 6.65% and Google
only see a 1.33% share of the
Chinese market.
 Ecosia GmbH was founded on
December 7th, 2009 and is
based in Berlin. Ecosia search
results are provided by Bing and
no personally identifiable
information is stored on Ecosia.
They claim they use the search
technology of the search expert
Bing and make it even more
efficient with their own
algorithms.
Crawling
The crawler scans the web and creates a list of all available websites. Then they
visit each website and by reading HTML code they try to understand the
structure of the page, the type of the content, the meaning of the content, and
when it was created or updated
Indexing
Information identified by the crawler needs to be organized, Sorted, and Stored
so that it can be processed later by the ranking algorithm. Search engines dont
store all the information in your index, but they keep things like the Title and
description of the page, The type of content, Associated keywords Number of
incoming and outgoing links, and a lot of other parameters that are needed by
the ranking algorithm.
Ranking
Ranking is the position by which your website is listed in any Search Engine.

Impact of Search Engines
Search engines have become integral to our daily lives, profoundly influencing
how we access and process information. They employ crawling methods to
discover content, using links as signposts to navigate the vast expanse of the
web.
The effectiveness of search engines is critical, as they shape our understanding
of the world by determining the information we encounter. Their architecture can
significantly affect the results they produce, impacting everything from
environmental footprints to societal dynamics.
Search engines are evolving with AI enhancements, promising to revolutionize
user experience through improved storytelling and search result relevance. As
such, they hold a powerful role in shaping society and the dissemination of
knowledge
Future Trends in Search Engines
AI-powered assistants like Googles Bard and Bings Copilot will act
as intelligent oracles, interpreting your intent and delivering
comprehensive solutions.
Rise of the AI
Oracle
Search engines are prioritizing content that genuinely helps users
achieve their goals. This means content thats original, insightful,
and well-researched will reign supreme, while low-quality, keyword-
stuffed articles will fade into irrelevance.
Focus on Helpful
Content
Search engines are becoming adept at understanding and ranking these
non-textual elements, making multimedia content a powerful tool for
engaging users and delivering information in a captivating way.
Multimedia
Explosion
Voice Search Takes
Center Stage
As voice recognition technology continues to improve, expect search
engines to prioritize results optimized for conversational language and
natural responses. Businesses need to ensure their websites and
content are voice-friendly to stay ahead of the curve.
Future Trends in Search Engines
By analyzing your search history, browsing behavior,
and online interactions, they can tailor results to
your individual interests and needs. This can be a
boon for users seeking relevant information, but also
raises concerns about privacy and data control.
Personalization
Reigns Supreme
Search engines are evolving to connect you not just
with information, but with experiences tailored to your
unique context
