8. San Diego Export Activity with
Mexico and the Border
• San Diego exports to Mexico grew 15% from 2013, almost $700
million
• Mexico continues to be San Diego’s largest international trading
partner, accounting for over 80 percent of the total value of two-
way trade
• This continues the pattern seen in the region since NAFTA was
implemented in 1994
• San Diego partners with Tijuana in the design, engineering, and
development of many of the products manufactured in Mexico
9. Supplier Opportunities
• The aerospace industry has the largest presence in Baja
California with 82 companies, more than 28,000 employees and
technical training centers for welding and design.
• Medical device production is the second-largest industry, with 66
manufacturers and more than 42,000 employees. About half of
Mexico’s medical device exports come from Baja California.
• The automotive industry includes 80 companies established in
Baja California.
• There are more than 200 electronic companies in Baja California
with 92,000 employees.
