Expression is a way of taking breastmilk from your Breast without your baby needing to suck. Simply put

Gently massage your breast Cup your breast just behind your areola Squeeze gently, using your thumb and the rest of your fingers in a C shape

Ways to Express Milk Type How it works Whats Involved Hand Expression You use your hand to massage and compress your breast to remove milk. Practice Skill Co-ordination Manual Pump You need your hand and wrist to operate a hand-held device to pump the milk Practice Skill Co-ordination Automatic, Electric Breast Pump Runs on battery or plugs into an electrical outlet. Can pump one breast at a time or both breasts at the same time. Double pumping may collect more milk in less time Need places to clean and store the equipment between uses.
Storage
Label the date on the storage container Gently swirl the container to mix the milk No Shaking After pumping

Plastic bottles with tight fitting

Tips for refrigerating or freezing Leave an inch from the milk to the top of the container Refrigerate or chill milk right after it is expressed Store milk in the back of the freezer not in the freezer door Place it in a cooler or insulated cooler pack

Breast milk does not necessarily need to be warmed Place in the fridge to defrost slowly Place the container in a bowl of warm water Holding the container of milk under cold running water No Microwave Swirl the milk and test the temperature Do not re-freeze Tips for thawing and warming up milk
