An extended case study allows students to explore a scenario in depth from different perspectives through independent research. It involves providing students a case study and role, having them research and prepare findings, then presenting to a panel who can ask questions. This develops critical thinking as students consider different viewpoints and stakeholders. It benefits students by allowing in-depth study, developing critical thinking and reflection skills, and considering different perspectives on a topic. Setting it up requires a team approach for complexity.

1. Extended Case Study
What is it Extended case study:
useful for? To get students involved in a scenario undertaking independent research and exploration of
the scenario from different points of view.
Who is it Any learners who would need to explore a particular scenario/s with some depth of
useful for? analysis and critical thinking
How can you This activity can be planned to involve several stages:
use it? Provide the learners with a case study scenario and assign them a role to look at the case study
from a particular view point.
Ask the students to research and prepare their findings ready for another session.
You can set up the final session as a panel whereby panel members also take on different
roles/expertise.
Students are then asked to present their findings to the panel and be prepared to answer
questions during this process.
It could be a group session where students with different points of view listen to each others
findings and potentially a discussion in the form of a meeting could be instigated.
Also opportunities for students to reflect and evaluate the process afterwards would be
beneficial.
This could become a formative or summative assessment activity
