Questions (Control – Click to go to the answer) Why does Lynnfield need to expand our high school? What are the educational advantages of the additional space?
Why does Lynnfield need to expand our high school?   Lynnfield High School was built to accommodate 590 students. The current student population is 10% over this capacity and is projected to reach 38% over capacity (over 800 students) by 2014. The building must expand to provide needed classroom and science laboratory space.    In the previous high school renovation, completed in 2003, the student enrollment had been projected to grow 10% over 10 years according to a NESDEC (New England School Development Council) enrollment study. In reality, the high school has already grown by 40%.   The Lynnfield school system attracts and retains families to the community because: - All four schools were simultaneously renovated and replaced; - Lynnfield High School has received state and federal academic achievement awards - The Lynnfield Public Schools have received national recognition for academic achievement - A strong real estate market   Today, once the project is approved by the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) Lynnfield will be eligible for 40-48% reimbursement on the project costs. The town would not have received this funding if the classrooms had been part of the original renovation because reimbursement was only allowed for space to accommodate the NESDEC enrollment projections.   Back to top
What are the educational advantages of the additional space?   Classes will be taught in appropriate spaces, class sizes will remain reasonable and specialty space will be reclaimed.   Currently, the high school has turned multiple spaces that were not originally intended as classrooms into classroom space. Several computer labs, a small presentation room in the media center and some office space have all been converted to classrooms. Some science classes meet in regular classrooms without any laboratory equipment. For science, this means that temporary lab equipment must be used, changing the lab experience for students. Or, schedules must be rearranged to give science classes access to fully equipped lab space. In the media center, the noise and traffic of conducting a class can impact activities in the media center.   Without the addition, more compromises will have to be made. Classes will be held in non-traditional spaces such as the cafeteria, stage and auditorium. More importantly, class sizes will most likely increase. One factor in the success of the high school has been the ability to maintain reasonable class sizes. Appropriately sized classes help meet the needs of all learners and allow each student to achieve at their highest level.   Back to top
