On May 18th, popular science activities and an elementary-high school composition contest were held in Shanghai to celebrate International Fascination of Plants Day. Over the following two weeks, more than 20 organizations in China hosted lectures and exhibitions about botany. Topics included plants and the environment, biofuels, food nutrition, genetically modified plants, and food safety. On the same day in Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, over 100 middle school students participated in educational talks and a guided tour of the garden where they learned about plant and biological diversity.

Fascination of Plants Day Success Story 2013 China Report
1. On May 18th, the opening ceremony of the Second International
“Fascination of Plants Day” popular science activities and the
awarding ceremony of the “Second International ‘Fascination of
Plants Day’” National Elementary-High School Composition Contest
were held at Shanghai Chen Shan Botanical Garden.
The CSPB, the activity coordinator in China, participated in the
organization of the activities whose theme was to promote the
relationship between plant science and everyday life. This
coordinated activity, aiming to popularize knowledge on plant
science, will plant virtual and constantly germinating seeds in the
collective mind of the Chinese and world public recalling that plant
science is of critical significance to the social, environmental and
economic landscape now and into the future.
During the following two weeks, Shanghai Chen Shan Botanical
Garden, South China Botanical Garden, Wuhan Botanical Garden,
Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Beijing Botanical Garden,
Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and other more
than 20 organizations hosted a series of popular science lectures
and exhibitions on botanic life. The activities featured topics ranging
from plants and the environment, biofuel to food nutrition,
transgenic plant to food safety, combining science with colorful
activities.
