Willard Boyle and George E. Smith invented the CCD or charge-coupled device in 1969 while working at Bell Laboratories. The CCD converts images into digital data immediately, making digital cameras possible. Although Steven Sasson created the first digital camera, he relied on the CCD image sensor developed by Boyle and Smith.
