It is a distinct pleasure for me to write in support of my student, Jackie Pang. He studied in my lab for about three years, during which time I witnessed his research achievement and outstanding leadership.
Jackie entered my lab when he was a junior student. At first He had difficulty accepting the strict attendance and assignments. But soon, he learned to manage his time, work in group situations and enjoyed the opportunity to learn from his older peers.
In the past two years, Jackie took a great deal of work in the projects. Even so, he spent most of the rest of time doing research and published several technical reports and papers including one journal paper in both scientific visualization and information visualization.
Jackie is an outstanding student of wide interests. He has won many awards on math, physics and informatics. He also received many honors from many cities, colleges and societies.
Jackie has a lively and enquiring mind. When he comes up with a new idea, he always writes it down and discusses its feasibility with his peers. He also has strong practice ability and done a lot of pioneering work in team building and infrastructure construction. Last year, he developed a website for us to review papers online and created a wiki site for his group to share their experience.
Jackie is also very kind and willing to help his classmates. He always collects materials from the web and sends them to others after putting these materials in order. He is also careful and responsible, and can express clearly.
Since Jackie has long since become the most valuable member of my lab, and a role model for his newer classmates, I recommend him to your fellowship program with absolute confidence.
Thank you for the opportunity of correspondence.

Hi~ everyone, let me tell you a story about me. Yes, my name is Jackie Pang, you can call me Jackie. I hope you will enjoy these slides.
There is a saying that I like very much: I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am. I think maybe it can explain why I’m here. I’m 25 years old and here is my basic information. I like making friends, so just email me.
This sentence is said by our former head-master Mr. Gu. I still remember it because he taught us how to be a real researcher. That is accept the challenge, serve the society and build our character. I think I benefit from it a lot, and these words unconventional, efficient and responsible play important roles in my life and they do bring me success as you can see from these pictures. I’m a Ph.D. student with a variety of interests. I like reading, researching and programming. I also like playing badminton.
In 2006, I graduated from my high school in Chongqing and attended Tsinghua University and received my bachelor's degree. I like School of Software, because it feels just like a big family to me.
The year before last year, I chose to stay in Tsinghua for further study instead of looking for jobs just because I like researching. And I entered the Department of Computer Science and Technology. My supervisors are prof. Yong and prof. Chen, both of them are skillful and patient. This is our research group which is led by prof. Chen. She is such a nice teacher that we all like her.
My major research covers Scientific Visualization, Information Visualization and Visual Analytics, which means what I do is transforming data into a graphics And in this way, people can get a better understanding of the data. I also like Computer Graphics, Computer Vision, Parallel Computing and Data Mining.
I have won many honors and awards in the past six years. And the proudest moment is when I spoke at the graduation ceremony. I am grateful to have been awarded Beijing Excellent Students. And I also won the National Scholarship and other scholarships.
During these years I also attended many competitions such as Outsourcing Service Innovation Contest, Software Design Competition, Challenge Cup Contest and so on. Our research group Vseeks and Liumai-shenjian Team are unity and mutual assistance . All of us remain in touch with each other.
My first research project started in 2007. In this project, we have designed an Online Judge System. This system supports programming competition and agent competition such as Gobang and Tank War as you can see in the top figures. When this project finished, we have served more than one hundred registered students and our group Vseeks also won 2 top prizes at our university.
My second project “Optimal Design System for Craniomaxillofacial(/kreiniə, mæk'silə, feiʃəl/) Surgery” stared in 2009 when I entered our lab. At that time, the core modules of this system has been finished. What I have done are giving a summary of the latest implementations for Marching Cubes and designing transfer functions using shape features. At last I found three ways to represent shape feature as shown in the right figures.
There are two projects I'm working on right now. One is the key project supported by NSFC. The left figure shows the user interface of our platform DONAP, which is short for Disaster Oriented Numerical Analysis Platform. With this platform researchers can do modeling, meshing, Finite Element Analysis and visualization. In this project, I develop a multi-perspective visual retrieval toolkit for researchers to analyze the high dimensional seismic data. And I also introduce an optimal color mapping strategy for time-varying data visualization.
Another project is NSFC-JST Key Joint Funding Project. This project focuses on Massive Numerical Simulation , which means all the buildings in a town or a city should be considered. The right figure shows only one building with complex structures. In this project, I try to use transfer function to define the importance of a specified feature, so that the marching cubes meshes can be decimated by considering different features interactively. Another thing that I’m going to do is to compute the optimal camera parameters for volume rendering of time-varying data. The figure in the middle shows the phased results.
My future projects include a rendering framework based on OpenCL, a multi-dimensional transfer function design and topology based vector field visualization. The architecture of our rendering framework is shown in the top figure. In this project, there are three key issues and I plan to solve these problems within 2.5 months.
I also participate in different social activities because I really enjoy the moment that I make someone else happy. In 2008, I worked as a volunteer of Beijing Olympic Games. I’m also the counselor of the class of 2013 at School of Software. I have accompanied them for nearly three years and we've all grown up. Four years ago, when I was the president of the students’ union at School of Software, I directed the arts festival gala and that night was really fantastic. Moreover, a lmost every year we go to a different city to learn about society and gain ability in the practice.
