Poverty is defined as lacking material possessions, money or basic human needs. Countries with high rates of poverty include Mexico, India, Haiti, Nigeria and Venezuela. Child poverty is especially severe, with 1 in 6 African children dying before age 5 and nearly 1/3 of African children being underweight. While increasing access to education, infrastructure, basic necessities and standard of living can help reduce poverty, challenges include corruption, economic crises, disease, war, and natural disasters. Ending poverty requires efforts from governments and individuals through donations, volunteering and other actions.
