 We have information about the
  evolution of the image of the
   women in ancient times and
   nowadays from sculptures,
paintings, pictorial performances,
  photos, generally through art.
Cycladic female sculptures
   Woman as a symbol of fertility (3000-2000 BC)




 In Cycladic period we have nude
 female figures with arms folded
 across the belly. Many believe that
 this symbolize the woman's fertility.

Women in Minoan & Mycenaean art
 In Mycenaean period, men and women
 wore jewelry impressive base or precious
 materials depending on their social class.
 Some jewelry was sewn into their clothes.
 The Mycenaeans had paid special
 attention to hygienic and beauty. Women
 in Minoan and Mycenaean period were
 painted eyes, lips and face

Archaic period
     Chores: the beauties of Athens (800-500 BC)




In the Archaic and Classical period, the
female figures on vases and sculptures
generally are decently dressed. The
female figures choreswere young girls
who pretend good, elegantly dressed,
decorated with many ornaments

Hellenistic period
      A mix of Greek & Roman style & values
                (350 BC  324 AD)


From the second half of the 4th century.
B.C. especially in the Hellenistic period,
the status of women improved
considerably and released from the
conservatism of the classical period. In
art, this is reflected in the appearance for
the first time naked female statues (eg
Venus), and the construction of female
figurines are known for their grace.
