ISSUES AND OPPURTUNITIES IN SINO-AFRICA COOPERATION ON
TOURISM AND WILDLIFE CONSERVTION
2016/11/10
By Thebolo Koosaletse, Lebogang Galegane and Nancy Kwelagobe
Gaborone- On the 8 November 2016, we gave a presentation on the topic, Issues and
opportunities Sino-Africa Cooperation on Tourism and Wildlife Conservation at the University
of Botswana in Gaborone. The presentation was attended by the Senior Lecturer and
Programme Coordinator of Chinese Studies Dr. Sara Zumbika-Van Hoeymissen and CHN 403
fourth year students.
Miss Galegane started with the introduction where she mentioned that ;Africa is well-known
for its diverse wildlife. With the creation of conservation tourism, people from all over are
flocking to Africa to see the planet’s most stunning wildlife in its own natural habitat. As a
result, Africa’s wildlife is driving business, safeguarding wildlife, and contributing to a brighter
future for all of Africa.
Illegal wildlife market is an industry making millions and which has left some African wildlife
species on the verge of extinction. African countries, civil societies and global institutions
need to work together to combat trafficking networks.
China has had to come up with various ways to combat wildlife harmful practices such as
poaching. Chinese embassies in different African countries also play an important role in the
protection of African wildlife in countries they are situated in.Chinese nationals in Zimbabwe
are helping protect the country’s wildlife with new equipment and technologies. Tourism
trade between the Asian nation and Africa has been expanding over the years.
The most popular destination in Africa for Chinese tourists is Sub-Saharan Africa. In southern
Africa, South Africa is the most popular Chinese tourist destination. In our conclusion Mr
Koolatse noted even though there are negative issues, African countries have more to gain
from Sino-Africa cooperation. Through their continued cooperation, wildlife conservation can
continue to see positive results in the protection and conservation of endangered African wild
life. The improvement and continued hospitality and acceptance of Chinese tourist, will help
African countries to gain more in the tourism industry.
We ended our presentation by posing the question to the audience ,what do you think
African countries can improve on in order to attract more Chinese tourists and to conserve
their own wildlife.
COMMENTS
Dr Sara Zumbika-Van Hoeymissen said we should have compared Chinese tourists in Africa
with other countries to see the difference. She also said that we should have included
poaching in Botswana, there is an issue of Chinese stealing rhino horns in Botswana and it
goes without saying that they are hiring Batswana poachers to kill the rhinos and steal their
horns. Mr Kobamo Seroba said that elephant trunk and rhino horns theft is a serious issue
that need to paid serious attention to.
Dr Zumbika said, there is need for the government to consider selling rhino horns as there is
market for it especially at China. On answering our question, Miss Sthembile Mafika from the
audience said more African countries can copy from South Africa and introduce Chinese
language to tour guides . she also said its upon us as Chinese studies students to go out there
and look for work at Tourist places like Safari lodges.
Even though China is helping tackle the issue of poaching, as long as there are some Chinese
locals who are involved in rhino horns then China is not doing enough to help fight poaching.
There is need for Chinese embassies in Africa to teach Chinese locals and tourist the need to
conserve African wildlife.
