CONCEPTUAL DESIGN | PART I SOPHOMORE YEAR | FALL 2009 STUDIO | ARCH 201 Assignment_ 1|Explore line, edge, and space. 2|Manipulate studies to portray dictated ideas [array, rhythm, radial, hierarchy, etc] 3|Pick and pursue concept while keeping ideas previously dictated in mind. 4|From 2D design create a 3D expression within a 1 space with no glue. medium_Drawings | hand drawn ink on vellum with rendering done with graphite. Model | museum board and modeling supplies. ConCept_MOTION | through the study of line, edge, and space relationship I chose to explore the implication of motion within a 2D form. In the design process I established a structural system while maintaining the concept. The wood became the structural elements while the museum board acted as the experiential motion. PROJECT DURATION_ approximately 4 weeks 2
CONCEPTUAL DESIGN | PART II SOPHOMORE YEAR | FALL 2009 STUDIO | ARCH 201 Assignment_While maintaining the concept and design from part I, continue the exploration of a 3D form but this time within a 1x1 cube. medium_Model Making Material | wood and museum board. Drawings Material | black and colored ink with renderings done with graphite. ConCept_MOTION | While maintaining the knowledge and concept from part I, I explored the possibilities of the 3-dimentional form. Keeping with the architectural language from part I the wood is again the structural support and the museum board becomes the visual motion through the space. The black planes imply the original rectangular language from the 2-d design. The white ribbon wraps the cube as a uniting element for the cube as a whole. The rotating boxes emphasizes the depth of the cube while maintaining the language of motion. projeCt durAtion_approximately 4 weeks 3
APARTMENT LAYOUT JUNIOR YEAR | FALL 2010 STUDIO | ARCH 301 Assignment_Design a single apartment unit within 1000sqft space. medium_Drawing | sparpie and trace [preliminary vellum [perspectives]. Model | model making supplies, wood and museum board. ConCept_MOVEMENT | WORKING Within the amount of space required movement through out the space plan with a central core to create an open space. The issue of protecting the users privacy also became a priority. Employing curves through the space as a movement through a given space depending on its function. To differentiate the spaces steps are placed as a bridge between the different spaces. acting as the dividing factor between the private and public spaces. Storage space is located behind the bathroom which provids storage for the kitchen as well as the bedroom. A horizontal wall system is found on used to emphasize motion forward through the space. While the second space has vertical shelving system to employ a more stationary language. The curve found in the second living space is more rotund, creating the bedroom space is a sharper more sever curve to emphasis the privacy of the space. projeCt durAtion_approximately 2 weeks 4

FACADE STUDY PALAZZO AVILA_VIA GOVERNO VECCHIO JUNIOR YEAR | SPRING 2011 Assignment_Analyze and synthesize a classical building located in Rome. Thoroughly and accurately study and produce STUDIO | ARPL 302 a highly crafted drawing of a building facade, study that facade, and then transform the facade into a modern or [ROME, ITALY] contemporary facade that builds upon and compliments the existing classical facade. medium_ ApproACh_New facade was created based off of main ideas from the original facade. Ideas were | Light airy top vs. heavy bottom, thin layered top, asymmetrical entrance placement, and implied structural system. The new facade was layed out based on a tartan grid created off the existing facade. projeCt durAtion_approximately 3 weeks 6
APARTMENT COMPLEX JUNIOR YEAR | FALL 2011 URBAN DESIGN STUDIO | ARCH 301 SITE | 10TH AND V ST [U STREET AREA] WASHINGTON, DC Assignment_Design a mixed-use apartment-housing complex in a dense area of Washington, DC. Physical BULDING USAGE CommeRCial institutional model. Intention was to design a building using site Residential ChuRCh analysis and taking into consideration site context using the computer. medium_Drawings | AutoCAD [preliminary design], Revit [drawings and 3D renderings], Photoshop [renderings and drawings], Illustrator [diagrams], and Indesign [laying out presentation]. Physical Model | chipboard, and lazercutter. ConCept_ContrAst with unity | While exploring the site and its surrounding contrast seemed relevant in FIGURE GROUND the area. Contrast of styles and materials were found design based on contrast with unity, main ideas were carrying idea of row homes, and opening the corner up to the public creating an open space to give back to the area. Each apartment is unique in shape but all are is pulled away from the main structure to create an interior courtyard for the apartments. A louver system is placed for sustainable reasons and varying in density CITY GRID NEIGHBORHOOD GRID to differentiate each unit from one another creating a unity of the apartment building while maintaining the row home language. Commercial space is placed on functions. The commercial entrances are placed in the front and the residential entrances are placed in the rear of the site. [A]SCALAR | RESEARCH COMPLEX SENIOR YEAR | FALL 2011 DESIGN STUDIO | ARCH 401 SITE | Arlington gAtewAy PArk rosslyn, VA Assignment _ Explore the poetry of architecture while responding to the different scales that exist. Design a research complex dedicated to researching extinct two programs, a research facility and a visitor center. The site is split by a road and a major high way passes under the site. medium _ Drawings | Rhino [preliminary drawings and drawings]. Model Materials | Chipboard, Museum CONCEPT _ Wrapping | Reacting to the splits of the site I wanted to connect the two pieces of site. Also in response to the program I wanted the research center and the visitor center to wrap and always have a visual connection between the two. Design developed into between the two creating a constant visual connection themselves. The programs were split between the two buildings and the connecting circulation circulates around the enclosure becomes an experiential element. The existing public walkway was redesign the buildings as a way to excite and interest people to return and enter the visitors center. This area also became the access to the entrances for the buildings. Outer shells were added to hide the crystalline building to bring people to the site. The outer shells respond to the city scale, while the two wrapping buildings respond to the buildings immediate scale. The public walkway creates an public atrium at the center at a supported with massive trusses to create a loss of 10
