Campaign donations of $200 or less made up over a quarter of the funds raised by presidential candidates in 2008. Small donations have increased in importance as the costs of running for office have risen. Candidates who engaged small donors were able to raise more money overall, showing that candidates who make an effort to reach ordinary citizens can be successful at fundraising without reliance on large contributions from wealthy donors.
