Viruses and bacteria are microscopic organisms. Viruses come in two types - active and hidden. Active viruses can make you sick immediately while hidden viruses can survive dormant for hundreds of years. Viruses are smaller than bacteria and contain protein coats and DNA. Antony van Leeuwenhoek first discovered bacteria in the 1600s using microscopes. Bacteria can reproduce through binary fission or conjugation and take different shapes like spiral, rodlike or spherical. They can be helpful in food production or harmful if not treated by processes like pasteurization.
