CTD Sp14 Weekly Workshop: Getting feedback from your studentsPeter Newbury
?
The document provides strategies for instructors and teaching assistants to get effective feedback from students, such as setting clear expectations, enabling open communication channels, and responding to student challenges. It recommends using techniques like muddiest point cards, two-minute pauses during lectures, and keep-quit-start feedback forms to understand what students are understanding and struggling with. The goal is to help instructors continuously improve their teaching based on meaningful input from students.
This document provides guidance on how to be the world's best law professor based on educational research findings. It discusses how testing students early and often can improve learning outcomes, as initial failure primes the mind for deep learning. It also discusses the benefits of "spaced education", where content is revisited repeatedly over time in low-stakes tests, as confirmed by extensive research. Finally, it emphasizes how distributing practice of content across time rather than cramming improves retention, in line with the goal of students recalling information years later for the bar exam and legal practice. The document encourages incorporating these research-backed techniques into legal education for better student learning outcomes.

CTD Fa14 Weekly Workshop: Getting feedback from your studentsPeter Newbury
?
This document provides suggestions for instructors to get feedback from students in order to improve their teaching. It recommends that instructors 1) set clear expectations with students about providing feedback, 2) enable and encourage open communication channels like anonymous surveys or discussion forums, and 3) react to student challenges and requests, such as by adjusting future lessons based on feedback. Specific techniques discussed include using minute papers or muddiest point notes to get immediate feedback, implementing occasional two-minute discussion breaks during lectures, and distributing keep-quit-start cards to facilitate feedback. The overall goal is to create a feedback loop that helps both students and instructors learn effectively.
This document outlines a research study on the common mistakes made by freshman college students. The study aims to identify challenges freshmen face in their first year so future students can better prepare. It will survey current sophomores and juniors about their experiences as freshmen, and interview freshmen about difficulties they currently face. A literature review found that freshmen often struggle with time management, lack of social skills, and not defining life goals. The study will use questionnaires and interviews to collect both qualitative and quantitative data, which will be analyzed to test hypotheses about mistakes freshmen commonly make and how they can be avoided. The results are intended to help freshmen succeed and make fewer errors in their critical first year of college.
7 (good) reasons why I am discouraging students from using surveys as a data ...Bridgette Hattingh - PrQS

Students seem to choose surveys as their preferred method of data collection for their thesis.
I have no idea why.
I am on a mission to discourage this.

The document discusses the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha and the story of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) being commanded by God to sacrifice his son Ishmael. It notes that Ibrahim passed this test, showing obedience to God, and in doing so became an example ("ummah") for all of humanity. It emphasizes that the spirit of Eid al-Adha is to be willing to sacrifice what we love when called to do so by God, and that true sacrifice is not easy but difficult.
Time Inc is one of the largest media companies in the world reaching over 130 million people through magazines and online platforms. It publishes magazines like NME that target young adults, which is also the target audience of my magazine. Distributing through Time Inc would provide an advantage since they have experience targeting this audience and a large existing consumer base. Bauer Media Group is a large European media company that publishes magazines similar to my proposed magazine, but none in the same genre. Distributing with Bauer would allow my magazine to reach a large global audience and fill a gap in their portfolio.
The target audience for the media product was 16-25 year old males and females interested in chart music, R&B, and hip hop. Focus groups with this target audience provided feedback to help design a product that would appeal to them.
To attract both male and female audiences, neutral dark colors like black and red were used throughout. While more details targeted male interests, female music icons and a double page female spread helped attract females. The front cover used a bold, bright design with "exclusive" content to draw attention, while the male model's neutral pose could appeal to females.

The document provides instructions for a controlled assessment project on Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein. Students are asked to create a detailed resource on the various social, cultural, and historical aspects that were prevalent when Frankenstein was written. This will include commenting on how the context affected the text and linking specific examples to show influences. Students are expected to thoroughly understand the context to avoid missing important influences, such as Romanticism, science, women's issues at the time, and related literary works. The resource will be shared as a class for a comprehensive understanding of the novel's context.
The document provides guidance on writing a good thesis statement. It explains that a thesis statement should make a clear main point, embody an evaluation or judgment that can be supported with evidence, and contribute something meaningful to scholarly understanding. It gives examples of good thesis statements and notes what a thesis statement should not be, such as a statement of fact, personal opinion, generalization, or question.

The document discusses the Rosenberg self-esteem test and an IAT (Implicit Association Test) that the author took. For the Rosenberg test, the author scored in the normal range but felt the test was not broad enough or helpful enough, only containing 10 questions. The author believes the tests should provide more feedback and tips to improve self-esteem. In contrast, the IAT provided clearer instructions and explored categories of good vs. bad associations. The author felt it did a better job of explaining the purpose and directing people to learn more.
The document provides guidance on creating effective essential and unit questions to guide curriculum and instruction. It discusses how essential questions can be overarching questions that span multiple units while unit questions focus on a specific unit. Examples are provided to illustrate how different unit questions can support a single essential question. Tips are also given for writing good essential and unit questions, such as making them open-ended and focusing on how and why rather than what, who, or when. The creation of questions is portrayed as an ongoing process.

Blind Spots in AI and Formulation Science Knowledge Pyramid (Updated Perspect...Ajaz Hussain
?
This presentation delves into the systemic blind spots within pharmaceutical science and regulatory systems, emphasizing the significance of "inactive ingredients" and their influence on therapeutic equivalence. These blind spots, indicative of normalized systemic failures, go beyond mere chance occurrences and are ingrained deeply enough to compromise decision-making processes and erode trust.
Historical instances like the 1938 FD&C Act and the Generic Drug Scandals underscore how crisis-triggered reforms often fail to address the fundamental issues, perpetuating inefficiencies and hazards.
The narrative advocates a shift from reactive crisis management to proactive, adaptable systems prioritizing continuous enhancement. Key hurdles involve challenging outdated assumptions regarding bioavailability, inadequately funded research ventures, and the impact of vague language in regulatory frameworks.
The rise of large language models (LLMs) presents promising solutions, albeit with accompanying risks necessitating thorough validation and seamless integration.
Tackling these blind spots demands a holistic approach, embracing adaptive learning and a steadfast commitment to self-improvement. By nurturing curiosity, refining regulatory terminology, and judiciously harnessing new technologies, the pharmaceutical sector can progress towards better public health service delivery and ensure the safety, efficacy, and real-world impact of drug products.

47. National Academies Bio 2010 The ways in which students are taught and learn biology are as important as the content of the material covered. The large lecture courses that are still the usual format for lower-division science classes often fail to keep the attention of some students. Students come to the classroom with preconceptions about how the world works. If their initial understanding is not engaged, they may fail to grasp the new concepts and information that are taught, or they may learn them for the purposes of a test but revert to their preconceptions outside the classroom. Transforming Undergraduate Education for Future Biologists
48. Bio 2010 Life sciences majors must acquire a much stronger foundation in the physical sciences (chemistry and physics) and mathematics than they now get. Connections between biology and the other scientific disciplines need to be developed and reinforced so that interdisciplinary thinking and work become second nature. ... Equally important, teaching and learning must be made more active to engage undergraduates, fully prepare them for graduate study, and give them an enduring sense of the power and beauty of creative inquiry. The Future of Biology Requires Interdisciplinary Science
49. Bio 2010 Scientific discoveries and how they were made can be communicated in mutually reinforcing ways. ... Noteworthy current advances should be presented along with classic discoveries. The covers of major journals often have striking images depicting important research findings.
