Wipes products are facing increasing pressure from consumers and governments over issues with flushing them down toilets. Recent lawsuits have sought millions in damages from damage to plumbing and sewer systems caused by wipes that do not fully break down. Developing a wipe that breaks apart easily in water while maintaining strength has been a technical challenge. A company has made a breakthrough with a patent-pending technique using natural fibers to create a wipe that maintains integrity for use but disperses like toilet paper when flushed, avoiding plumbing problems. Testing by a sewage authority executive found it was the only product besides toilet paper that fully breaks apart during flushing.
