FLYERS WIN 5TH STRAIGHT BUT AT WHAT COST
BY:George Remaily
The Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night won their fifth straight game as they
beat the Tampa Bay Lightning, 5-2 at the Wells Fargo Center. The win continued
the teams winning ways and the Flyers lead the Eastern Conference with 39 points
and a record of 18-7-3 but it may have come with a very big price tag. The injury
bug looks like it is continuing for this team as they lost two key players Saturday
night. Claude Giroux and goalie Ilya Bryzgalov left the game with injuries.
The Flyers right now can not afford any more injuries especially to their key
players. The team is playing right now without its main horse, captain and defenseman
Chris Pronger. The team has found out that it could be without Pronger longer than they
initially thought because the captain is now having concussion like symptoms. This
after Pronger just had surgery to his knee and was expected to be out of the lineup
for six weeks. This current news on Pronger is not good and it really looks like
the team will be without him for a longer period of time. There really has to be a lot
of concern within the team. So anymore injuries, this team can not afford right now.
Claude Giroux left Saturday nights game in the second period. It appeared to be
an innocent play. Giroux and teammate Wayne Simmonds came together and Simmonds
tried to jump over Giroux. When attempting to jump over his teammate Simmonds knee
hit Giroux in the head. He left the game and was examined by team physicians and was
kept out of the rest of the game for precautionary reasons. The Flyers medical team will
reexamine Giroux on Sunday and find out if the injury is more serious and in fact a
concussion.
The injury list looks like it might get another on it. Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov looks
like he suffered a lower body injury in the second period of Saturday nights game. He
tried to continue to play in the game by coming out in the third period. The injury
stiffened up and he left the game with 13 minutes to go. It does appear that it is not
a serious injury but stay tuned. Could more bad news be coming. The Flyers hope not
and can not afford more injuries to their main players right now.
The Flyers played a very lack luster first period against the Tampa Bay Lightning
Saturday night and fell behind the Lightning 1-0. Ryan Shannon scored for the LIghtning
and put them on top of the Flyers early. In the second period the Flyers almost tied the
game when Kimmo Timonen hit the goal post on a slap shot as the Flyers were killing
off a penalty.
The Flyers scored two goals 34 seconds apart. Danny Briere scored from a pass from
Simmonds and than Jaromir Jagr quickly connected on his 10th goal of the season with
16:48 left in the second period.
Simmonds made it 3-1 Flyers when he took a backhand shot and it deflected off the
skate of Tampa Bay defenseman Brett Clark and found its way into the net. Late in
the second period Jagr came very close to scoring again for the Flyers as his shot hit
the crossbar.
The Lightning cut into the Flyers lead when Vincent Lecavalier scored on a power play
goal early in the third period and it made it 3-2 Flyers. The Flyers scored on another power
play goal by Matt Carle. The Flyers ended the scoring when Scott Hartnell put the icing on
the cake with an empty net goal and the Flyers had their fifth straight win.
In these five straight wins the team has done it in different ways. They have fallen behind
in some games and come back to win. They have jumped off to quick starts in games and
won games. The team right now is finding ways to win. They are getting good goaltending
as well. Different guys each night are stepping up their play as well. The thing that has to
be of concern to the Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette and general manager Paul Holmgren
is the injury list looks like it is continuing to grow. The Flyers just seem to be finding ways
every night to win games. Each player is picking up their game. It is going to be very
important for this team to continue success that the younger players in the lineup continue
to play well. The other night the Flyers had seven rookie players in the lineup and they
have played well. Head coach Peter Laviolette may have to have these younger players
play more if the injury list gets any bigger. The Flyers can not afford to have too many of
their main horses fall to injury.
The Flyers travel to Washington on Tuesday night to take on the Capitals. The team
hopes to continue its winning ways and put the streak to six straight wins. Hopefully the
news on Sunday will be good on Claude Giroux because he is a big part of this teams
success and future success and him being out of the lineup will not help. Before leaving
Saturday nights game against the Lightning Giroux had two assists pushing his league
league total to 39 points. Flyers fans have got to hope that the news will be better
for Giroux than it was for Chris Pronger. The Flyers certainly hope so. The streak
continues for this team. Did it come with a big price, well we will certainly find out and
find out Sunday morning.
